So anyways my good ol family has managed to lose the power cord.

I know i should phone dell but i can sense a 300 rand bill coming, can i just use one of those cheapies from the hardware and what voltage would i use.

If they've lost the power cord going from a 2 or 3-pin plug to the power supply, then you can simply replace it with a cheap cable that you should be able to get in a hardware store.
Like I recently used an old radio's power cord for my Dell laptop's power supply, since it was giving me problems.

It's a completely different story if they've lost the power supply! Then you'll probably have to pay R600 for a new one, because the laptop power supplies have some "intelligence" in them.

Else get those all-in-one thingamajigs

Im sure those cables are available at Brights and Zakspeed (if you in CPT)?

Eish i was afraid of that pada, the entire cable is gone not just the power cord :D. So there is 1 x laptop in bag that is all.

In jhb but if you can give me a number i can courier it up, will be cheaper than dell.

There are universal ac adapters in 65w and 90w flavours for far less than the real deal. Just need to check the power connector for your laptop. You get about 10 different heads in the box, in JHB call Sonic Informed in Midrand. Hope this is of help.
