There’s great demand for Windows 7 but the higher price may be a barrier to entry.

That’s according to Dell marketing executive Darrel Ward.

“If there’s one thing that may influence adoption, make things slower or cause customers to pause, it’s that generally the ASPs (average selling price) of the operating systems are higher than they were for Vista and XP,” said Ward in an interview with former CNET editor Brooke Crothers.

Ward continued, “In tough economic times, I think it’s naive to believe that you can increase your prices on average and then still see a stronger swell than if you held prices flat or even lowered them. I can tell you that the licensing tiers at retail are more expensive than they were for Vista.”

But apart from the price everything else (driver readiness being the big one) is looking healthy.

Ward added that many of Dell’s customers are still sitting with Windows XP and waiting for Windows 7 before they upgrade. There is great expectation in the market that Windows 7 will wipe out the bad taste that Vista has left in the mouth of many PC users.

But the crucial question is can they afford to upgrade to Windows 7.
