Democracy does not work

Oh and that brings me to another point, politicians should get minimal pay (as much as the average public servant gets).Politicians should not be allowed to take part in any commercial business and this should be part of the constitution.
After that only the people who really give a s%1t will aspire to become politicians and corruption becomes a lot more tricky.

Am I being optomistic?:p

My 2c.

Party puts down its plan, in writing, for the 5 years and people get to vote. Party than wins election has 5 years to do everything that it said it would. End of 5 years they get paid if they have delivered. And if they have delivered within budget, they can get the difference as a bonus.

That might actually work!

Democracy doesnt work because its about how popular the candidate is not how much ability they have.

Democracy is founded on tensions - it is reliant and dependent on dis-agreement. That is the biggest conundrum about democracy as I see it.

Except every party will claim that it will cost four times more than it will, so they can squander money, and still get a bonus

It doesnt matter which system is in place, there will always be disagreement. What distinguishes systems is how they deal with that disagreement. From the extreme of a system which kills anyone who disagrees to a system which becomes paralyzed by disagreement.

I can't see Timocracy or Technocracy working. I think it's unjust to allow only a certain group to be able to be involved in government. The common man in the street would have no real say, simply because he doesn't have a degree or because he perhaps doesn't own a house? How is a land owner more capable of running the country?

There are over 40 parties vieing for votes in the upcoming elections. For sure there is a strong likelihood that the ANC will be voted in again but that is due to the majority of the population electing them. Fair is fair.

What if that were to his benefit and ultimate upliftment? What if he was a much richer and happier man despirt being disenfranchised.

I proposed something along the lines of Starship Troopers where citizenship (or rather, in this instance, the franchise) is earned, not just given on a platter when you turn 18 years old. In the book its service that guarantees service - so those serving in the armed forces, for a determined period, have the right to vote. There are many other categories for helping out and serving your country (economically or otherwise) that would earn you the vote - not merely having a degree. Perhaps a meritocracy?

"It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried." Sir Winston Churchill
