Hi guys

Is there a medical aid just for dental procedures available? I Googled a bit and found www.affinitydental.co.za, but they only cover a few things.

I'm with Discovery, but their dental cover is appalling.

I need it for existing issues (need new crowns and 1 implant)

No medical aid will take you on and cover existing issues easily.
 
That's what I thought :p

Bloody hell...why do medical aids not cover dental procedures -.-

What are you being charged for your implant if I may ask? I've still go two baby teeth that will eventually need to be replaced with implants, no idea what the cost would be.

I had an implant done. You looking at about R25k with 80% going towards the half day in hospital, theatre, the titanium screw and anaesthetist. I had to foot the bill though :-(

It wasn't a bad experience either, hardly any pain, no infection or issues, just swollen for a week.
 
I had an implant done last year , cost 15K got 70% back from medical aid (Discovery) , The dentist has now closed his practice and gone on a sabbatical. did the procedure in his rooms, didn't feel a thing .

I have it. Got a tooth chipped and although Discovery paid the dentist in full Edgars dental still approved my claim and paid the money into my bank account within 2 days after I claimed.

I just had to scan and email the documents and it was done. Very nice cover to have even if you have medical aid since it is a insurance and they pay cash to you when you claim.

Currently having implants done, had 1 done last year. It was a tooth that had to be extracted and the implant to replace it. Straight forward procedure = +- R8K to place the implant and expose it 4 months later.
The other 3 are a lot more difficult due to me having dentures for more than 20 years already. Very little bone present so the specialist had to split the bone to place the implant (Google 'ridge split' for more info, but be warned very graphic images). Very painful procedure and there could be failures....as in the case of 1 of the implants. After 9 months we discovered 1 of the implants didn't take so we did a bone implant and it will heal for another 6 months now. Going back in April to check.
All 4 implants, including the 1 already done will most likely come to +- R40k and it was all done in the "chair" to save on theater costs. The above excludes the dentist and lab costs for the crowns.

If you decide to pay out of pocket for your dentals, I can advise to shop around a bit.
I recently changed to a dentist that is located in a more townshippy area than I would normally feel comfortable in.
I was pleased to discover she is a young lovely asian lady and very professional. I could make same day appointments.
You pay a flat cash rate for the work you need to be done. R500 a filling including X Ray, R250 for an extraction (including wisdom teeth removal). I was quoted R3000 for a wisdom teeth removal a few years ago.

On the other hand, my wife went to our familiar dentist who is a middle aged toppie and known around town as a preferred dentist. She had to book two weeks in advance. Her two minor fillings and a bit of cleaning had to be split into two consultations (??) and it had te be against the medical aid. She was kept waiting over 45 minutes for both consultations. Total cost R2800.

What discovery options include dentistry?
 
Bah, I'll have to pay it myself it seems.

I need the implant done urgently as the tooth is dead and causing infections every few months, which is annoying. This after I had a root canal done.

I don't know but I'm on a very lowish plan KeyCare Plus and they cover basic dentistry. By basic that means no surgery in a hospital and stuff like that. Also have to go to a dentist in their network. Lucky for me the dentist they cover in my area is the one that charges the most Medicross Dental.

Keycare also paid ALL my bills for my Lymphoma treatment with one of the best Oncologist we have here with state of the art machines. They paid out over R350 000 towards my treatment with co payment only in the R2000 range total....
 
I have Discovery coastal saver and have never had any issues (they do take it out of the savings part), but maybe because my procedures have been fairly standard.

Had two wisdom teeth removed, and two root canals done (all in the chair).

Do you have these details? Anything below R1000 is super cheap.
