The Gauteng education department on Monday began an investigation into an apparent no-fee school in Olievenhoutbosch, near Centurion, that allegedly expelled a pupil for not paying school fees.
"We will be sending someone from the district office to the school today [Monday] to go and investigate," department spokeswoman Phumla Sekhonyane said.
"The official will investigate and provide a report, and we will act on the report."
Sekhonyane could not confirm a report that the Walter Sisulu Primary School was a no-fee school. She said this would be established during the investigation.
The Sowetan newspaper on Monday reported that a six-year-old girl was expelled from the school because her mother could not afford to pay the fees. The Grade R pupil has been at home for two months.
"I pleaded with the principal... but he mercilessly showed my daughter and I the gate," the girl's mother was quoted as saying.
Principal Garos Kabinde declined to comment to the report, referring queries to the department.
