I am returning home on Sunday after 5 weeks in Europe. I must now go back home to my slow shaped and extremely expensive internet and Communications in SA. My 4meg uncapped mweb account is costing about R900 per month and then DSTV cost an additional R550 or something.

Compare this to where I am in Holland in my brothers house:
Optic fibre into his house with line speed of 100mb up and down, totally uncapped with a fixed IP address. His package costs €55 per month (about R520) for optic fibre line 100mb, telephone line with unlimited landline calls in Holland and cellular rates about half the cheapest cellular package, digital tv (60 channels) and 30 digital radio stations.

The above is more than half less than what I am paying but for so much more.

Just before typing this message I downloaded the newest Ubuntu CD image (670mB) in about 100 seconds. It is so nice seeing speed being reported at more than 10MB per second. Luckily he is setting up a download server for me in his house and I will be able to move files with http over to SA without shaping of newsgroups or torrents.

I feel your pain man, every-time I went overseas to visit I dreaded having to come back.

It's best you just prepare to move, do the visa bs and enjoy life. No need to pay these crappy companies thousands of rands while they sit there and do nothing about customer service, internet speed...all the companies here care about is ripping you off and retiring early in Europe.

F that, life is short, too many beutiful countries to explore! I don't know where I will end up next, either back in the US for good or Japan/UK/Germany/France...decisions decisions...

If i didn't have family a in SA then i would prob also move to another country when i'm old enough and when i have enough money.

hopefully south africa can catch up a bit to europe in the next five years. our geographical position doesn't help us unfortunately. i'm sure the ISPs realise we want better speeds, unshaped and uncapped lines and most importantly - better prices. they just need to do what they can to meet our expectations. telkom needs to lose its status as a monopoly before things will really change for the better, that's for sure.

Agreed 100% I still have a lifetime ahead of me. (Grade 12 this year). Thinking of going to Europe or maybe US or OZ to find work for a year before studying further (If I can study there and earn, what a pleasure). I mean, chances are that I find an average "IT / videography / Video Editing" Job there and actually be able to study there through a company. Even if I only earn a few pounds a month, at least I know Internet costs wouldn't be a problem :P. I know its wishful thinking and not always very realistic when you are from SA, but hey nothing keeps a man from dreaming ;)

:( wtf.is wrong with our country.even other countries in africa have better internet than us.

I always find it funny when people compare price and speed when they come from Europe to SA. My office in Hong Kong has a 1GB line for US$30 a month. What would I think if I went from HK to Holland had had to deal with 1/10 of the speed for double the price? There's always somewhere that's faster and cheaper.
