JOHANNESBURG - Clive Derby-Lewis' lawyer said the 77-year-old reapply for medical parole as he has served almost 20 years behind bars.

Derby-Lewis was given a life sentence for his part in the assassination of former South African Communist Party (SACP) leader Chris Hani in 1993.

He was denied medical parole earlier in April.

He suffers from prostate cancer, skin cancer and gangrene.

He applied for medical parole in 2012 as he is terminally ill.

Derby-Lewis reportedly wants to apologise to Hani's widow.

His lawyer Marius Coetzee said, “It’s a very good and solid profile. He is totally rehabilitated and a gentle person. He is no danger to society and he should not be kept in jail.”

Meanwhile, Coetzee said Derby-Lewis’ wife was very disappointed with the decision to deny him parole.

Comment:
I see no reason why he shouldn't get parole. I think precedence has been set by other political prisoners.

I suspect that there is an unwritten / unpublished law that the ANC government has - "Under no circumstances will Derby-Lewis be released from prison, he must rot and die in prison" - such is the hate for this man and his crime.

Personally I think he should get medical parole, but don't see it happening.

I have no love for this man, his actions could have sparked a massive mess.

But that being said i feel that keeping him in jail is hypocritical, keeping in mind some of the recent high profile parolees we've seen.

He killed somebody in cold blood and almost started a civil war.
Let him rot

Well he's rotting, quite literally

Actually he didn't ... Janusz Walus did.... Derby-Lewis was only convicted of conspiracy to murder

From Wikipedia:
Chris Hani was assassinated on 10 April 1993 outside his home in Dawn Park, a racially mixed suburb of Boksburg. He was accosted by a Polish far-right immigrant named Janusz Waluś, who shot him in the head and at the back as he stepped out of his car. Waluś fled the scene, but was arrested soon afterwards after Hani's neighbour, a white Afrikaner woman, called the police. Clive Derby-Lewis, a senior South African Conservative Party M.P. and Shadow Minister for Economic Affairs at the time, who had lent Waluś his pistol, was also arrested for complicity in Hani's murder.[4]

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the REAL brain behind Chris Hani's murder walks free ......................
