Convicted killer Clive Derby-Lewis has been attacked for a second time in prison, the correctional services department said on Monday.
Derby-Lewis was attacked by another prisoner at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre on Sunday, spokesman Manelisi Wolela said.
"The Gauteng region of correctional services has launched an investigation... The injury on his back caused by a glass used by an offender is described as minor and was treated at the local centre clinic," he said.
"Local management of the centre has spoken to the perpetrator and Clive Derby-Lewis... and information remains scant and unreliable to derive any concrete rationale for this unacceptable conduct."
Wolela said Derby-Lewis was due to visit a hospital on Monday as part of a court application.
"...The injury will not interfere with Derby-Lewis's planned hospital visit this morning [Monday]," he said.
"The department condemns these incidents and continues to intensify both crime intelligence gathering and anti-violence intervention to ensure safe custody of inmates."
Derby-Lewis was sentenced to 25 years behind bars for his role in SA Communist Party leader Chris Hani's killing. He has already served almost 20 years. Hani was shot dead in the driveway of his home in 1993.
In February, Derby-Lewis was attacked with a spoon by another prisoner, and suffered lacerations on the head and hand.
In March, his wife went to the High Court in Pretoria to obtain an order for him to visit a private hospital to be treated for his injuries in the first attack.
The Saturday Star at the time reported that the court ordered Derby-Lewis be transported to hospital for medical attention.
"Eventually, the court ordered that my client be transported to hospital and that the DCS [department of correctional services] cover all the costs thereof," Derby-Lewis's lawyer Marius Coertze was quoted as saying in the newspaper.
Wolela disputed the report saying the court would only allow Derby-Lewis to go to hospital if he followed department procedures.
"The final court order was rejected and the final decision of the court was for normal department procedures to be followed," said Wolela.
"Even offender Derby-Lewis was taken by surprise and did not instruct anyone and [wants to] have nothing to do with the application."
Wolela said the court told Coertze he was wrong to force Derby-Lewis to do something he did not want to do.
"The court instructed the attorney to resolve the matter with correctional services and to follow the prescribed procedures [and] complete the forms..." said Wolela.
