Why intentionally start with an older version of Batocera though? Why not just use the latest first?

There should be a way to take the blank screen away and see the actual console, then you can see where it's getting stuck. Try Alt+F1 or Alt+F2 or even just Esc.

FYI this stuff almost never ever "just works" which is why Linux is not yet Desktop ready.

Looking at the Batocera compatibility info, they tested V32 with the NUC BNH model that I have and claims it worked just fine.

Would be lovely to find a console that I can use but everything just points to SSA as the go-to when finding a blank screen - thing is, I am not sure whether it's a built in graphics issue or whether it's a bloody UEFI boot issue so trying to sort that first

Will test this on the Batocera and if doesn't work, will try some other Distros to check if it works

Right - reflashed USB with Batocera V32/V37/V38/V42 using USBImager this time and have run into exactly the same bloody issue

Batocera boot screen shows for 1second then just blank screen

Makes me think there's some graphic issue at hand here - time to tinker with the boot config file and see what's happening! Learning a lot but would love to see some progress soon

Why are you wanting to install Batocera? To install emulations and stuffs on that?

Why not just use windows? Its already working https://es-de.org/

So my daughter doesn't have to worry about random Windows BS updates or boot issues etc

Linux distros offer best console-like experience IMHO

Well then - had to eventually call it quits on this Batocera installation. Just couldn't get the darn unit to boot properly. Removed SSD/NVME drive, flashed separate SSD and installed as only drive, removed one DIMM and tried, swapped DIMMS around, replaced CMOS battery. Nothing worked.

Some positive news is that I had a fresh WIN11 install lying around so decided to do a barebones install and just go with Retrobat (Batocera for Windows) as the all-in-one emulator. Works like a dream! Did run into a couple of issues regarding VSYNC and Sound when plugging into HDR TV but a bit of troubleshooting and managed to iron out most of the problems.

What a journey it's been so far! My wife was obviously not too happy with my head stuck in my screen for most of the bloody day yesterday but when I booted up some Sega Genesis and SNES games, she was more than happy to join in on the Earthworm Jim fun!
