Are unicorns a myth? I am not a designer myself but a lot of SA sites look terrible! Is there anyone here that works as just a web designer? Does design fall under front-end?

I've seen a unicorn. Was a rare hornless one and yes, it did poop rainbows.

I also had an encounter with the hornless rainbow pooping unicorn once.

It was majestic

I FIRMLY believe that design SHOULD NOT fall under front end.

Design should be left to designers. Frontend developers should have to translate what the designer has given into working code.
What you can also do is have the developer be able to give some feedback on the design which can possibly be incorporated.

What can happen with a developer/designer feedback loop is the developer guides the designer into doing stuff that would be easier to code but not look as good. Naturally this should be avoided and the developer should suck it up and get developing.

I agree, I tend to give my designer the freedom and then do my best to translate that into code

I can't see how this is not common sense

I can't see how this is not common sense

This falls into no longer being common sense when the ******** client to be says "but this other guy on gumtree can make my website and business cards for R1500."

People don't understand that if you want true quality then you need to fork out for at least a designer & developer. Unfortunately these same people are still mystified by the shear awesomeness that is MS WordArt and hence accept anything that is slightly better than it.

I don't think it's wise to let designers run wild. Most designers come from a graphics design background and don't really understand aspects of IUI and sometimes things that they imagine are just not practical. I've found it's very important to have the feedback loop where developers can work with the designers to have a far better functioning application than one that just looks pretty.

Also, a lot of business couldn't care less for a unicorn. Most of the time, they want something cheap enough that is functional and looks decent. I think there are very few business that I have come across that needs a unicorn. Most will be happy with simplicity.

Graphical Architect I think they are called. Someone that can design a site with usability and coding restraint kept in mind and still make it look awesome.
but they are kinda expensive...

It depends on the system. The front end should focus on the process flow. The result should have taken into account the process flow, data model, end user etc. Usually there is a different design for the customer and the employees. The process flow is crucial for the customer services experience.
