Running Windows 8 64bit on a ssd in my desktop. Going to be travelling so wanted to know If I could just put the SSD into the laptop and start it up? Or do I need to do a fresh Install. I think Windows 8 lets you just swap HDDs if I am correct.

You'll have issues with hardware change and Windows licensing first in the laptop and when you reinstall the ssd to your desktop.
If you laptop is quite powerfull you could run a virtualised copy of the desktop's OS.

With the new Windows 8 notebooks, the licence key is coded into the motherboard.

No problems at all. I do it a lot - and just did it today again.
With Win7 the HAL gets messed up when you just move a drive to a new machine. Win8 is pretty intelligent and I have not had an issue moving my SSD around between machines.
With my new desktop I got today, the chipset is different to the previous Sandy and Ivybridge machines that used the drive. So win8 halted the boot and requested a restore. I assume it reset the HAL because of the different chipset as this was the first time I have seen the restore option.
It rebooted and carried on working as normal.
Win8 FTW.
EDIT: The SSD I did this with today has travelled from my Ivybridge desktop, into a Quad core Xeon server, then a Sandybridge XPS 15 notebook and now into a Haswell desktop. Zero hiccups dude.

Lol. Happened by chance.
I sold my Ivybridge desktop last week and got a dock for my XPS 15. While the XPS 15 is good, it did not quite compare so I built a new machine this afternoon and got a 3.5Ghz Haswell. Freaking thing is fast. Awesome machine.
