Do you use a Desktop Indexer like Google Desktop?
If so what do you use?

I used to use Google desktop but stopped using it a while ago because of some or other setting I couldn't change. I think it was to do with location and or size of index file.

Keen to hear about good alternates.

Sorry if I'm being ignorant, but why not just use Windows Vista/7 build in indexer? Or are you not using Vista/7?

I'm still using my trusty 'effective file search' - but that is quickly getting old, also busy looking for a good alternative. Gave google desktop a go few decades ago, just did not like it. Might be a good idea to give it another go sometime...

to add custom locations to the built-in Windows search indexer:

open explorer
top right hand of window, in the search box, type anything and hit enter
search will start, a search window will open
in the search window, on the yellow bar, right-click and select "modify index locations"
add whatever folders you want windows to index.

once added, give it some time to index the location, (check the "searchindexer.exe" task for memory & CPU usage)
after it completes the index your searches will be almost instant.
