Hi Guys,

I am looking for a decent (i3 4gb ram) desktop pc for home use. I have been looking around and it seems Laptops and desktop pcs are almost the same price. I was hoping to save a bit by getting a desktop. Any advice on where I can pick up something decent at a good price?

Game, Makro.

No that's is a bad suggestion.
Seriously.

Either go to a computer store and ask there or go to a site like Rebeltech or similar for full systems.
Take note of the specs and buy the components separately.
Build the system yourself for much cheaper.

if a guy needs to ask a tech forum where to buy a PC then Game or Makro would be their best bet

No he is asking for good advise not bad advise.

Checkout sites like Rebeltech or wootware - they can also assemble the unit for you if you don't want to do it yourself. Goto Makro or Game if you want a crappy pre built Mecer or Proline PC.

Budget, you cannot do anything without a budget. What's your idea of saving money, spending 3k,4k,5k?
An i3 desktop will obviously be more powerful than an i3 laptop.

The desktop variant of the i3, has a GPU build in that outperforms a 8800GT, which was the card needed to play Crysis at the time at medium.

Around R3k

Here's a possible core build. Think an i3 might be pushing it for that budget, it won't be really worth it if you can't back it up with the right graphics card and games so you might as well commit to midrange.

Total (Without Vouchers):
R1976

Your basically left with R1000 for the case, power supply and graphics card. If you shop smart, you can increase that amount.
Now here's the question, do you plan an upgrade in the future?
Also with a 3k budget it might be worth it to go second hand.

You'd be looking for cards that scored around 2000 with passmark:

Example on a quick search:

R450

If you not planning on further upgrade then a case + generic power supply might actually suffice.

R600

That's R 1050 for all three, and you'll have yourself a respectable performing PC.

Building your own may be cheaper and quicker, but you can also find some decent refurb machines for a low price from brands like Dell, HP and Lenovo and you can usually extend the warranty on these. There's no mention of whether Windows is needed, which can affect the cost significantly.

Not many ppl would have heard of them or used them.
Your 96 post promotion of them does not make me want to use them.

Scams are rife on the internet, just do a search on this forum.

I understand, there are a lot of scams, but these guys are a registered company and are legit. I had no problem with them. I even verified their bank account, same company, same company registration number.

Mate, i think you are a little unfair towards me, especially because I only have 96 posts...

uhm... So what do you want? a desktop or a laptop?

Do you want a fully functional pc (case with everything inside, montor, keyboard and mouse) for 3k?

It's possible, but I don't think that you will get much life out of it if you planning on keeping it around for say...5 years.
