Hi guys

Just wondering what is the recommended retail prices for a desktop pc?
Specs: its a business pc (no real graphics card required or super specs)
+ i3 or i5
+ 4 GB Ram
+ 500 GB HDD

Dont see a lot of desktops being advertised, and it seems that they are the same price as a laptop?

Thanks.

A cheapie i3 will cost you a little over R5k without software. If you are looking for a prebuild pc with a subsidized windows then go with a branded box like HP or Acer. The other popular desktop brands also has desktops on the market but they are usualy the mini pc like intel NUC or gigabyte Brix

Greetings OP,

Why not have a look here: PC International - www.pcint.co.za

While you may not buy from them, it'll give you an idea of the sort price you'll pay for a desktop pc. They a category for office pcs too, which may be more in line with the specifications you are looking for.

Thanks guys for the links.

Guess the part that confounds me is that if both a laptop and a pc are around R6k (pc excl screen)
...then why buy a desktop?

Im thinking about desktops because they are harder to steal, as I need to run an extra pc or two from home.
and not keen on having several laptops lying around.

I guess it's to do with volumes. Most i3 laptops start in the R6500 range these days. A desktop with a i3 7100 will be quite fast though, and should be easy to make the RAM sweet spot 8GB later on.

Then again you get some crap laptops in term of upgradeable (have to disable the whole laptop almost. Esquire for example sells cheap laptops with 2GB RAM (aka machine from hell) that can't be upgraded at all)

Retail consumer class laptops are built cheap and they don't last. If you must buy a laptop get a business class one. They are more expensive but worth it as parts are generaly cheaper.

Desktops don't have the high repair costs of retail laptops.
There are ofcourse exceptions like proline laptops are pretty cheap to have repaired. Even a motherboard swop doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Thanks for all the posts everyone, really appreciate it.
