My destops monitor has started periodically flashing black, not sure where to start looking to check why, and how to fix.

Help appreciated.

Opened it up pressed all the cards and RAM to check if all is seated properly. No issues detected, not feeling well, so will leave it for tomorrow after work.

Remember the HDMI port on the graphics card had an issue a year or two ago. Trying to remember what it was. Not sure, think it was not holding the cable, and I pintched it a little, and all was well, I think, but it still feels solid, so not sure.

My graphics card said goodbye shortly after similar shenanigans. Use onboard to see if problem persists.

My stories about similar issues:

AMD R9 290 - intermitted black flashing with my new 4K 60Hz monitor. Worked fine with 1440p 144hz monitor.
1080Ti - Same cable, same monitor, no black flashing

I tried different cables, different HDMI / DVI slots, reinstalls and driver updates. Nothing fixed it.

Bought a 5m HDMI cable to run to TV with my work laptop- black flashing issues. Works fine with shorter cable. So in this case cable.

Years later (probably after buying more cables and newer drivers) - R9 290 now works fine with the "problematic" 4K monitor.

So yeah, some GPUs seem to have weaker outputs. Buying a shorter, high quality cable specifically rated for your desired resolution and refresh rate may fix it.
It is now 6 years after I first saw the issue, the R9 290 is in it's 3rd PC and still going strong.

Played a bit, this morning, for a hour, and it behaved itself. HDMI cable is just the right length to reach from monitor to box, going to see if I can find a slithly longer cable to release the tension a little. Tho I figure it currently has minimal tension on it. See how that goes.

Thanks guys, just hope it is not because it is cooler in the morning ...

Connection probably.. my work laptop's HDMI port is a bit worn out and it also flashes black when connected to my wide screen if the cable is not seated properly, usually just needs a firm reseating for it to go away.

Same thing when I Warzoned the other night, copped a feel around the back & re-seated the HDMI, had prob shifted when I cleaned my desk.

I certainly hope so, as I cannot afford a new cheap graphics card, right now, never mind, a half way decent one.
