Desktop Speakers no longer work?

My standard Logitech desktop speakers just stopped working. Funny thing is, I have my headset with microphone still plugged into the main speaker, and the sound is fine through the headphones.
I've checked all obvious settings, nothing is muted.

Any suggestions on how to fix this would be appreciated.

Maybe I should have said:

I've checked all obvious settings, both hardware and software and also nothing is muted.

OK that does look confusing. its been a long week.
My point is, its always worked fine through my headset, and when I unplug it, it worked fine though the speakers.
Now the latter option doesnt work, although I havent changed anything.
