Hey everyone. I'm not familiar with this kind of connectivity, I always used adsl and mobile. We have adsl at home and work, both telkom line and adsl through mweb. The business is the small business 4mb uncapped deal, and at home also the 4mb uncapped.

I always used the 2 mb uncapped, and upgraded to 4mb, mainly because our previous merchant card machines could connect through wifi(the new ones not anymore). We battled too much with the connection speed going up and down, loosing connection, etc, so we stopped using wifi for that.
recently I installed office 365 on the work pc's, and started sharing some spreadsheets between users. What a nightmare. The shared files taking forever to save and upload whenever we edited them, making it impossible to use. So I stopped.
I even tried watching cctv camera footage via teamviewer, which I know is a long shot, but still, it was completely useless.

So dont know if the 4mb/sec is really doing it for me, I was thinking it's because of the poor upload speed as well. So someone suggested I use one of the 2 companies we have in Polokwane, which install this dish, and provide much better quality internet. The guy suggesting it said that the upload speed is the same as the download speed.

But, when I checked on the 2 provider's websites, it doesn't seem to be the case. Can anyone tell me if this route is the better way, and if this connection speed (upload and download) is the same, or not?

The following two providers are not the only ones in Polokwane.!

www.capricom.co.za

There is www.bosveld.co.za aswell as www.xpress.co.za that are lisensed providers in Polokwane. Please check all 4's fineprint before making a choice. There is also a couple of new kids on the block that wants to play with the older wireless companies in Polokwane.

One can most propably write a book about the different offers in Polokwane.

But would you guys say this is better than adsl? Worth the effort?

A proper WISP will IMO be much better than the best of ADSL options - even with a premium DSL ISP account in a relatively good (uncontended) exchange "area." Proper WISP's use fibre as break out point(s) which in most situations allows much better latency and better content ratios compared to ADSL as a wholesale and general offerings service/product. ADSL as "seen on the History Channel" - Neotel ad - go away ADSL - I'm always shocked to see new clients "shocked" when we show their ADSL speedtest results immediately after switching cables with our service (wireless) installed. We as a WISP can effectively and in real time manage and monitor our contend ratios and effectively managing our end user experience based on different user classes.

Latency is on average 30-50% better on general average than premium ADSL options, you also get the speed you pay for 95% of the time.

[Correct myself - ADSL on average 20-25ms - wireless service on average 9-18ms]

Capricom is possibily Polokwane's leader (Largest, deserved respect - good service!)

Thanks for you input, much appreciated. Yes I think Capricom is the leader, and I've seen many good reviews on them, on various occasions on facebook. My main issue is that the speed is most definitely not what I pay for with adsl, and once we go online with our office setup, I dont want to battle, and move again and again. But so far I've seen only good reviews on wisp and think it is worth the investment(dish, installation costs), which is currently more or less R 3500 in Polokwane.

Thanks everyone!
