Johannesburg - A key witness in the Molemo "Jub Jub" Maarohonye murder trial was shot and killed by armed men, City Press reported on Wednesday.
The investigating officer in the case, Major Moses Segapho, was shot dead around 22:00 in the Angola squatter camp in Kliptown in Soweto, south of Johhanesburg, on Tuesday, the paper said.
Maarohonye and his co-accused, Themba Tshabalala, are accused of murder and attempted murder after they crashed their Mini Coopers - while allegedly street racing - last year, killing four school pupils and injuring two others in Soweto.
According to a police spokesperson, Segapho was conducting investigations in the informal settlement.
Lieutenant Colonel Tshisikhawe Ndou told EyeWitness News ( EWN ), "When he was about to get out of his vehicle, he was attacked by two armed suspects, who shot him."
He said the suspects then ran away and disappeared between the shacks.
It is not yet known whether Segapho was alone.
Ndou said the motive for the killing is not yet known and nobody has been arrested, according to EWN.
Segapho was involved in the Jub Jub case from the start as the former branch commander of the Protea Glen police station
He accused Maarohonye's lawyer Ike Motloung of interfering with witnesses during his testimony in the trial in July.
The remarks drew the ire of Motloung who sarcastically called the policeman "a superstar in the newspapers" during cross-examination because Segapho had told the court he didn’t take full statements from passengers involved in the accident because they had been coached by Maarohonye's attorney.
The case against Maarohonye and Tshabalala has been postponed to February.

Does this affect his case at all? I don't think so, considering he has already testified. Seems a very sad coincidence...
 
Yea, although suspicious, I would have to say it has to be coincidence.

Why after? Why silence him once he been outspoken, although this is south africa so maybe killing people after they have talked is logical.

Sure but murder is a fairly big thing and i would imagine you silence him before not after. The damage is done so get it before or why bother.

Then again perhaps you are right. Sounds to me more like he is investing a little bit too much on other cases and they took him out before he got too close.
 
The guys that shot him didn't steal or take anything?
Sounds dodgy to me, maybe the criminals are running on African time so they where late in shooting the Copper.
 
Condolences to the man's family. I feel this is just a tragic coincidence, if he was killed in his driveway or home that would be a bit more suspicious but it just seems to be another fallen officer in the line of duty. RIP.
 
Dunno, still sounds like a hit to me and the timing links it to the child-murderer's case.
