If I wanted to spend this year becoming a developer, what would the best certification be? I was looking at MCSD but there are mixed reviews.

I am currently doing a general IT diploma so I know the basics however I want a specific specialization.

I'm curious about the MCSD, what bad things have people said about it? I am working towards MCSD this year :/

Probably one person who told him that he didn't like candidates who have it.

It's never counted against me once in 7 years, so I think you'll be fine.

Don't take the comment too seriously, just comments I saw online when trying to find someone to study through

Head off to coursera & edx do some free courses there. Those free certificates helped me more than my BSc studies in getting a job. The Android ones always get interviewers interested even if interview is not for app development.

Other freebies to boost your CV are the free MongoDB courses. Get a crap load of recruiters bugging me since I did those.

Interesting, thanks

How does one apply this to employment, do employees really buy into "free courses"? Do you have some sort of profile that displays courses completed?

Also thanks for the info its really appreciated, site looks cool

They will catch you out in interviews if you lie on your CV about these courses. I personally like to look out for these on CVs as it indicates a commitment to learning. Once you start doing these you will understand.

Let me put it this way. I work for a company I love and I want to work for. I failed getting a job with them the first time, the second time I got the job and these courses made the difference. I've also been approached by some interesting companies via LinkedIn because of these short courses.

Put it this way, it can't hurt to give it a try.

The mixed reviews are probably the people complaining they have to keep them up to date. It never hurts to have an MCSD, MCSE or A+.

I just would not pay for an A+ unless I was 19 and trying to get a R2K a month job at my local internet cafe. Don't forget that certificate now has a shelf life unlike the past so needs to be renewed after 3 years.

Only reason why I did min when I was 26 because I could not tell the difference between the keyboard or mouse PS2 ports. Back then we still had the challenge of different standards for our slots etc. How things have improved.

Depends what kind of developer you want to be and what tech you want to work with.

I think your best bet would be Udacity. They look really good. Some of the courses are co-created by Google, Amazon, Facebook, Github, etc.

I think most of the modules you can do for free, but if you want to do the whole course and get the qualification you have to pay. It's probably worth it if you can afford it. I'm planning to do a few of them myself.

Some of them have prerequisites. Just browse through them to find the beginner courses.

You'll also have a portfolio by the end of the course.
