Someone saying that second hand games are killing the market. I would love to hear opinions on this as I think they are just greedy, but there must be something to there argument. I would hate for the pre owned games to stop being sold...

Second-hand game sales are killing single player titles, according to Elite and Kinectimals creator David Braben.

The Frontier Developments founder said that "core" games and single player titles are becoming too risky for studios and developments.

"The real problem when you think about it brutally, if you look at just core gamer games, pre-owned has really killed core games," he said. "In some cases, it's killed them dead. I know publishers who have stopped games in development because most shops won't reorder stock after initial release, because they rely on the churn from the re-sales."

Braben believes that single player games are more likely to be bought pre-owned, meaning only day one sales really matter, making such titles high risk.

"I mean, the idea of a game selling out used to be a good thing, but nowadays, those people who buy it on day one may well finish it and return it," said Braben.

Braben also believes that prices across the industry would have dropped long ago if publishers received a share of pre-owned sales profits.

"Developers and publishers need that revenue to be able to keep doing high production value games, and so we keep seeing fewer and fewer of them."

O please, look at bf 3 and cod. Massive amounts of money made. How about mass effect 3 and so many more that are raking in record takings.

I could agree that piracy/second hand is hurting the single player market but then game makers need to grasp that online games sell and move towards online games. Stop moaning and figure out why the games are failing.

Besides who really wants to pay 300-700 bucks for an 8 hour game?

Second hand items are all over the place, why is just the gaming industry that has a problem with it.

I think it's a load of bull. They are just greedy.

maybe if all the new stuff was not the same as all the old stuff, people would buy the new stuff.

If you played Cod1, you pretty much played them all.

Try reading the article. They said second hand games kill single player gaming and you respond with predominantly multiplayer titles...

I do agree though that second hand sales are a bad thing. You guys have no idea how many copies of a game need to get sold for the publisher to turn a profit.

Homefront got sales of 2million and the studio got closed down.

Enslaved got a million in sales and we won't be getting a sequel.

8hour games are usually multiplayer focussed. I dare yu to show a single player game that's 8hours. That got released at full price of course.

Now I'll respond to the bolded part. Single player games fail because of second hand game sales :/

Super mario land 3d was less than 8 hours. The main story was about 4 hours.
There is bonus content, but i dont have the same motivation i had before completing the main story.

I have never traded in any of my games and I never will. The reason I buy the games I buy is because I like those games. If I don't buy those games the publisher will have no reason to make more of the game I like.

People need to realize that buying second hand doesn't support the publisher. Meaning the games you like won't get made anymore.

No, they don't. Smaller developers catering to niche markets or making crap games fail because of second-hand games. Singleplayer games are still selling amazingly.

Any form of the market failing because of second hand sales is bad. It means we get less variety and will be stuck with call of duty sequels forever.

Consumers need to start thinking further than their nose. How are you going to support the developer to make more games you like if you bu second hand?

Stupid consumers are killing their own past time.

You forget that a lot of consumers only buy second-hand because they either don't have the cash to buy all games new, or they're unwilling to risk shelling out R600 for a game they're unsure about. Taking away second-hand sales doesn't mean those people are suddenly going to start buying everything new. They're merely going to buy less games.

If you want to know what I think the real issue is? Piracy rates of 5:1 copies pirated versus copies bought. If only one fifth of pirates started buying games, instead of pirating them, you'd see much less smaller development studios constantly closing doors.

Agreed! If there is a specific game i want, i buy it new. The second hand market is small here that i just browse until i see something interesting.

Multiplayer games are killing single player games... I can't bring myself to play single player games. I think of the last 10 games I've bought I don't have more than half an hour of single player play time.

The only thing second hand game sales hurts is piracy...

I wonder what they think the people that sell their games do with the money they get from it.
Buy more games maybe?

To each his own. I find multiplayer a waste of time as there's no gripping story to follow. "Get gun, shoot man", gets boring fast.

The problem is entitlement. Growing up, a game a month was more than enough to keep me busy. Now there's this culture of entitlement. Everyone has to have every game. This is regards to pirates AND 2nd hand buyers.

There's more than enough cheap good games out now. Just go to takealot. There are hundreds of games for less than R200. People of course feel entitled to the brand new games. That's the issue.

Growing up in my time, the average SP game lasted more than 6 hours, so yes, it was more than enough having a single game a month.

The six hour games have multiplayer though.

Skyrim has no multiplayer and how many hours is that? Or The Witcher?

In general the games without multiplayer are longer.

^ this

Old games lasted more than a week, todays SP games feel like a 4 hour tutorial for multilayer action. Like I pointed out with Skyrim, if there is a decent SP games people will buy it by the bucket load.

Its not second hand shops thats killing games, its the quality of Single player games thats killing it.
