Hi all,

We are looking for a Developer, that can assist us with writing a application,

we make use of a software package currently that is sub par with our need ( buggy as hell)

We are looking for someone to write our own system, effectively , its a weigh in, weigh out, and pay type scenario , keeping record of stock bought, sold, etc,

what would be the going rate for a developer, per hour, to build such a system?

Anything from R100 to R5000

What system? What language(s)? What location? What hardware? Do you want to replicate the current system or just create a subset of the functionality? etc etc.

You need to create a better spec so people can give a better estimate.

If it's a stock management system, look at some opensource options rather than build a system from scratch

we run a recycling company, so guys bring us plastic, paper etc, we pay them,

interface with some serial port devices, ( read weights from the scales) , preferably web based ( not always possible with the serial devices?)

i was thinking this, but the interfacing with various devices might be a issue with existing solutions

If I was in your choose I would select an opensource inventory system that has the functionality that you want to use or might use in future and is also easy to integrate with and customize by a developer. The developer will then just code the integration part once the core stuff has been configured.

thanks, will look into that :)

So beside the bugs from the "package" that you are currently using, does it at least cater for those various devices as quoted in the second quote? Since you are asking for assistance.

yes it does

Serial with web based app is possible, atleast from a traditional pc based web browser.

Sure, but if I remember right it's a bit hacky. And it sort of defeats the whole purpose of a web app, so you might as well have stuck to a service/win app which is a lot faster and cheaper to write.

Always wondered how you pay those guys who collect the cardboard. If you pay them in kg and they guy brings in slightly wet cardboard it weighs more.

Do you keep track of the stock on hand in kg of both the input material by type as well she recycled output material in kg?

That sounds like Material requirements planning(MRP) and not just a stock management system as you produce one stock item from other stock item(s)

^What he said.

I spent some time with a client recently who wanted me to quote him on a custom-built inventory management, requirements planning, and order processing system. He was basically describing an ERP system, so I told him that it will cost him a fortune and take ages to build from scratch, and that he'd probably be better off looking at existing solutions. Based on my own research into the open-source space, Odoo and ERPNext look like pretty decent options. If you'd rather go with proprietary software, feel free to drop me a PM - I can refer you to someone who deals with that sort of thing.

As for rates, anything from R100 p/h (likely for complete garbage) to R1000+ p/h (which can also be complete garbage if you don't find someone who knows what they're doing). I'm specifically referring to freelancers here - if you go to a development house, they'll likely charge a great deal more.
