Development IDE

I was just about to make a permanent move to Ubuntu. However, I'm in need of an IDE for developing C++ applications. Easy enough. Problem is, I need a GUI builder as well. I've tried Code Blocks, didn't work. Tried KDevelop with Qt Designer. Failed miserably, even with the not so very helpful tutorials I found online. What I'm hoping for is an all in one package, if that's possible. If not, I need a new language (I'm trying to stay away from java, will only use it as a last resort)

Any suggestions?

Not too sure about C++, sorry.

Any reason for staying away from Java? Netbeans is great at GUI building, pretty sure there is an ubuntu version as well, if not swing is pretty basic.

Staying away from Java as Swing isn't powerfull enough for me :p

For instance, I needed to hide the tabs on a tabpage but couldn't find a simple way to do it.

Thanks MyWorld, was a good read. Eclipse might be the solution and always been a fan, so I'll give that a go.

Grim147, I love code blocks, but it doesn't do what I need. I can't get a GUI designer going (simple drag and drop). I know it sounds pretty pathetic, but coming from Windows, I'm acustomed to using things like that that make my life easy :p

Eclipse. Its in the repositories.

You will just have to install the C++ resources when you run the application for the first time. You can do this by going to "Help" then "Install new software". Select "All available sites" from the drop down box and then select "Programming languages" -> "Eclipse C/C++ Developement tools". It will install everything for you. Once you have restarted you must just switch to the C++ perspective (little icon in the top right). Then its all up to you.

what is it that you are trying to build? That is the first question we need to know the answer to ;)

Bit of an old thread, already moved on and stuck with Java. But to answer your question, just a simple desktop application witha basic database. Nothing intense, just a side project.

While we’re resurrecting threads…

I’ve been using Eclipse for almost 2 years now for development in Python – overall I’m quite happy. Only problem I have is the file system layout it tries to impose on projects.

I recently started using codelite and really like it. I like netbeams best for even C/C++ for its symbol highlighting, call graphs and refactoring, but codelite provides much of the same but adds some good old "editor" feelings back in the mix, sort of a blend of jedit and netbeans. Not sure if it does GUI building, doubt it.

don't open that URL in google chrome :| its very intensive.
vi is the business! I love it, but eclipse is still my favourite.. Never even heard of netbeans before today, or even codeblocks :|
I've only really used KDevelop on Linux. Our company doesn't allow us to run 'nix as our primary operating system cos of our crappy 4GL IDE, but I think thats soon going to be a thing of the past.

I rate I'm going to install Ubuntu as my primary this evening :)
