Hope you come right dualmeister, in my scenario the only thing I can think is like you say RichardP is that the 10m cable is killing any gain that I might be getting as with your estimations my 14dbi antenna should easily manage 30 - 50m as well as the 2KM I want to use for at a later stage. Gonna invest in a short cable and long power cord and test it out
on a RG-58 cable, you loose 1dbm per metre of cable... so at 10mtrs, you have lost 10dbm - if your tranmitter can do 15dbm, you killed 10dbm in the cable.
Altho, the maths shows the link will work at LOS at 500mtrs, I dont know whats on the receiver, which is also important.
I think thats partly where my problem lies aswell as although the distance between the machines is 50m at most there is no total LOS due to trees, bushes (even with going onto the roof) and walls. Thats why I thought of getting my neighbours antenna onto the roof as well to allow for total LOS
Ok, well lately my neighbour has been struggling to get any form of signal so it looks like I am going to need to do something
I want to keep it as cheap as possible so what I am going to do is order a 10m 400LMR cable (reading up on the minimal DBI loss on this cable makes me think i shouldnt loose more than 5-6 dbi leaving me with 8dbi) and replace the cheap cable I have at the moment with this.
I this doesnt work then I am going to get a yagi aerial and mount this on my neighbours roof giving clear LOS between the 2 anntenna
