A quick glance online shows multiple reports of Diablo 3 accounts being hacked, suggesting it is a growing issue. Players have seen the loss of items stored in character inventory and stash, and gold removed as their accounts are stripped bare. Blizzard has been working to "roll back" affected characters to a point before accounts were compromised, but some progress is lost.
The reports coincided with the EU Diablo 3 servers going offline on Sunday afternoon for around four hours, preventing players from logging in (error 33). It has been suggested that the EU servers were taken offline following a SQL injection attack, but this remains unconfirmed.
Blizzard offers an Authenticator designed to provide extra security to your account. Donlan did not have the authenticator before the hack, but reports suggest accounts have been compromised even with this enabled.
One theory suggested by players on the Battle.net forum revolves around hijacking session identifiers, which would allow hackers to take over accounts without alerting Blizzard's authentication server. Again, this remains unconfirmed.
Whatever the cause, Blizzard will be keen to address the situation quickly, especially in light of the upcoming release of the real money auction house and the growing complaints from players. Blizzard said last week it was set for release at the end of the month.
Eurogamer has requested comment from Blizzard, which is yet to address the issue.

Also, imo this is all being blown way out of proportion. This is par for the course regarding online games. Anything online can be hacked
 
I have the authenticator, I imagine if they try to log in on my account from Russia or wherever, they'll need my serial key and all that nonsense.

That being said, the minute you allow in game currency to equate real world value at something like a RMAH, you open yourself up to this kind of gold farming.

Well that is what everyone is suggesting. I think as long as Blizzard is not giving an official statement there is a lot of guessing going on as no one really knows what is going on.

I think the best thing to do is to play single player or closed multi

Same as gmail, login into Bnet from different location, and you'll be asked security questions to verify who you are
 
Well, good luck to them. Half the time my security answers are so obscure I don't even remember them :D
 
Apparntly they duplicate your previous login session somehow and bypass pass/auth

This person (or people) knew Diablo III was coming, they knew it would use Battle.net accounts, so they started targeting pre-existing accounts through World of Warcraft and SCII related content, maybe even users on the Diablo III beta forum. These types of things happen EVERY day with WoW accounts, some of the players even reported that their World of Warcraft accounts were hit in addition to their Diablo accounts.

This isn't a Diablo III serverside issue, it's happening now and all at once because these account phishers finally decided to "release the flood gates" after collecting enough data, data they have been sitting on and compiling for weeks. Need an analogy? Nicholas Cage, Gone in 60 seconds, instead of a list of cars they quite literally have a Microsoft Word list of battle.net accounts to rummage.

They're hitting every account they have access to before "The heat gets onto them" (before players catch wind of this and simply update their passwords) For those who were hacked, when was the last time you changed your Bnet password? Weeks, months, years? These people specifically targeted the D3 launch and sat on these accounts like a chicken on eggs, waiting for the majority of player to reach Hell and Inferno for maximum profit. Futhermore, what else of yours is infected? When's the last time you updated your email password? Is your bank account secure? What sensitive information is in that email that shares a password with your Bnet account? Before you go and update these things, is the computer you're updating from safe?

Closing note - If you believe the nonsense you read over at gamefaqs you're an idiot. Don't let someone's incredibly small minded speculation and scare mongering paint blizzard in a negative shade for you. I guarantee you once(if) Blizzard addresses this issue on the forums they're going to be accused of covering something up. This is AGAIN nothing more than player error with account security, something that has had such a high margin of fault in the past it was more beneficial for Blizzard to produce an authentication tool and hire a team to write a smart phone app because they were losing subscriptions and money over the ignorance within their playerbase.
