Hi guys
I need some help, I have been struggling to figure out our issue for months and I can't find a solution. First of all the problem is very intermittent so it is really hard to diagnose or get a Telkom techie to even find the issue.
The problem is ping in online games and packet loss. Especially when someone else is using the line (However it definitely occurs when it's only myself online). The line is almost never maxed out, most people are watching lower res youtube(480p). Some Supersport streaming or downloading at limited speeds all make the line behave extremely erratically. There is random packet loss and disconnecting. I could understand if it was constant high ping when someone else is using the line, but it seems to cut out whenever someone uses the line even if not near max speed. I would understand slow internet, but packet loss and disconnecting seem to not be a line capacity issue.
The line is 10mbps and Afrihost is the ISP (I'm ruling out ISP's as this issue occurs with a spare Webafrica account too)
I think I have narrowed it down to three things, but I can't be sure which is the problem.
This is the line stats on the router, The Downstream SnR margin goes down to 6db sometimes and the most I've seen it at is 11db. But I read somewhere that the downstream should be about twice what the Upstream is and it is not in this case.
So the first possible and probably most likely culprit is noise on the line. If the noise is a problem how can I fix this? Both our neighbours have electric fencing, but I don't think it runs close to the telephone cables, and I don't think they are faulty. If the noise is because of the state of the physical line, will Telkom be able to pick it up and replace the line? Or what can I do to confirm that this is the problem? There is a noise filter and I have tried different combinations of using the noise filter, not using it, plugging the phone in, plugging it out, plugging the phone in without the filter, and just plugging the ADSL in directly, but nothing seems to be making a lasting effect and DC's still occur. An interesting thing to note is when I plug the phone in without the filter, the line syncs at around 4mbps and is quite a lot more stable, but will still cut out from time to time.
So my second option is exchange congestion although I don't believe it is possible as our town is not that large and populated. Openserve was putting in lots of fibre in the area as well as upgrading the curb boxes (Ours is still not upgraded, but the one on the other corner of our street is).
The last option is the router (D-Link DSL-2740U), I don't know if we are too many clients or devices for it to handle, but could it be that a more expensive router could handle the network traffic better, or is it not enough to be causing issues? The setup in our house is 5 PC's and about 3 Cellphones plus a tablet every now and then, that use the router.
I would really appreciate any advice as this really makes gaming online an absolute nightmare if you play anything semi competitively.
