Dial-up and TelkomCloser

yeah, thats correct, 1 hour, so you should be able to download about 3 jpgs :D
As far as I remember the hour is only in call more time though....

is there a reason you are still on dial up- when I was on dial up it worked out way more expensive than adsl when I took everything into account

ah well being only 19 and living with my parents I don't have much choice. We'll be getting adsl soon tho. Oh wait, thats what my dad has been saying for the past 2 years :/. Anyways my mom says that they are still billing us for the internet, so maybe we must phone them or something.
But yeah it is a real pain. Waiting >1.5hours for a 10min youtube video to download is not my idea of fun...

yeah I hear you- dial up is terrible...

just do the costing, and show that to your folks- add up the phone bill and service provider charges- I guarantee it will be more than the cost of a 1 gig adsl account- and if not, then really close

Remember you get dropped now and then with dialup, not lekker. Rather get ADSL.

Dial-up: the bane of my life. It sucks but I dont have any other choice. Now at home I have the Telkom Closer plan 2. According to this page: www.telkom.co.za/products_services/telkomcloser/plan2.html it includes 1h free dial ups. Is my understanding correct?

This where they actually trick you. I know coz my parents were on this package for a while after I moved out.

Your calls to your ISP don't count for the 1 hour or less free calls. They are classified seperately as data calls and you pay for them. What Telkom usually try to do is convince you to by bundled internet hours which are far cheaper than their typical hourly rate, but are still a complete rip-off.

It seems they have changed things a bit, but it's still crazy not to get dobroadband 1 for R199 p/m if you are still on dialup. I have gotten this info off the Telkom site:

What else do I need to know?

* Internet dial-up calls (excluding the first 60 minutes), international calls, Premium rated calls ( 0860, 0861, 0862, 0865, 0866 & 0867) and calls to mobile numbers will be charged at normal rates.
* ShareCall (0860) and MaxiCall (0861) numbers qualify for the CLOSER benefit, if not an internet dial-up number.
* 60 FREE surfing minutes will apply to all Internet calls made during Callmore time, within the 0-50 km distance band (including 0860 calls, should your ISP make use of a ShareCall number).
* The Internet dial-up number must be registered with Telkom.
* Confirm your Dial up number – the following is important in order for you to utilize the benefits of your free surfing minutes:
o The dial-up or POP (Point of Presence) number used to access the Internet from home should be listed/verified with Telkom. It remains the customer's responsibility to ensure that Telkom has the correct POP number. When changing to another Internet Service Provider (ISP) please ensure that the new number is also listed.
+ Click here to find out if your POP number is listed
o Should the POP number that you use not exist on Telkom’s POP number list, please complete the online form and submit your request.
