I do NOT work for Rain.. I am independent, but been in ICT for a while (Since 1997).

But I hate disinformation.. monopolies or anything that I deem unfair.. Like this government proposal/gazette to own all spectrum, and disallowing encrypted broadcasts. Dis-fing-gusting.

The guy below says change LTE bands.. he's correct.. but it's not that simple.. you cannot just log into your router, change it to LTE or 4G and let that be that..

There is however a tool.. But the tool is not for someone that isn't familiar with working in shells or command prompts.

Yeah cavedog made a thread about this. Sucks I have the b315 router that only runs on the 1800mhz.

Did you try a Telkom B315? Maybe worth getting even secondhand to test.

Hey Dudes and Dudettes,

I too was frustrated.. except I knew why my LTE was so slow.

I followed a pattern of running speed tests throughout the day.. from about 10am to 11pm my downloads were super slow.. (about 1Mb/s all the way down to 300Kbp/s), and my upload were super high.. (anything from 15Mb/s to 50Mb/s).. I know i'm close'ish to pretty much all the towers (best way to test that is using speedtest-cli under linux.. as it will give you an accurate distance based on ping and km)..

So.. anyway, there's two LTE Frequency Bands that Rain use. One is the 1800Mhz band and the other is the 2600Mhz band. If you have a Huawei B618, then your router is capable of both Bands at FDD and TDD (TDD only on 2600Mhz). See: http://www.electronicdesign.com/communications/what-s-difference-between-fdd-and-tdd

Most likely, you are running your router on 1800Mhz.. which is congested... I'll show you:

I set my Router to LTE-1800Mhz: http://www.speedtest.net/result/7155714306

Now.. changing it to LTE-2600Mhz TDD: http://www.speedtest.net/result/7155720526

By the way, this was 2 minutes apart. I used the same test server WiFiWave (PTY) LTD to show an unbiased result.

Try switching to the 2600Mhz TDD (TDD important). It will make the world of difference.

I consistently get around 100Mbps with RAIN. Must be one of the lucky few as quite a few complaints starting to pop up.
Must just hold out till the fibre is complete.

Usually if you are far from the tower u can only connect to 1800mhz, it's go lower throughout and broader range... An external antenna pointed to the tower might help

I dont think there is much RAIN can do, it's a simple case of them not having enough spectrum in certain area's

Took a screeny of SABNzbD doing its thing.
Sometimes see it hit 10+MB/s, but generally 9 something. Same with Steam downloads.

Get about 10Mbps up.

Yes - 2600. I lose a bit on upload but gain significantly on download.

I do however have an external mounted high above my chimney which towers above the second story of my house. It gets me clearance across the whole neighborhood and basically LOS. Have 3 or 4 neighbours on RAIN, and none can get above 30Mbps. I have fun posting speed tests in the community Telegram group.

Days are numbered for RAIN though. Vumatel is busy hooking houses up to fibre and I have been scheduled for hook-up in the next 2 weeks. Going for 200/200 which costs about the same as my current RAIN sub. Can't wait...
