Hi , i can use my phone modem to dial up to my home pc which i setup with an incoming connection , is it possible to use my 3g data card to do the same?

Depends, but the short answer is: yes, if your home PC is permanently connected to the internet, the longer answer depends on whether you have a Huawei [HSDPA] data card which I assume you don't bcos you posted 3G...

I am confused...
So instead of the *99***1# vodacom dial up number, I want to dial my home phone number through my hsdpa modem to establish a connection.
Why would my home modem need to be connected to the internet all the time if i set up an incomming connection on it , as with the phone modem?

I have the hsdpa modem aswell , whats the story there then?

To check we understand your home setup:

You have a normal modem connected to your PC and make a normal call to the modem to attach to your PC?

You should be able to do this with a data card. It is called a Circuit Switched call, i.e. a normal telephone call. This will work fine but has drawbacks, cost and speed. You'll get a very low throughput while paying for the time you're on-line.

A better way would be to connect your home PC directly to the internet with a 3G/HSDPA card and configure this with the 'unrestricted' apn.

From your 3G/HSDPA phone/data card, you now make an IP connection to your home PC and get high speeds, while only paying for the data you transfer.

Dunno why, but I assumed only the Huawei HSDPA data card dashboard would be able to do CSD [HCSD?], but I suppose one should be able to manually create a new connection in heXPee Networking & Whatsits, and instead of the *99... put in 0$$TELKOM$ or whatever, and that would be the number that gets dialled by the data card through the sim card...?

@natal black, like v3g posted, the way you want to connect [effectively via dialup RAS], is going to be slow and expensive, best to equip your home PC with a 24*7 <disclaimer>properly firewalled</disclaimer> broadband connection, and connect via the internet instead of via outdated telephone call...

Probably because it's one of the few (if not only) data cards with a socket for headset, so you can make voice calls.

But all cards can do CS calls, you just don't have a way to get the audio in and out. I've seen software before that allowed you to do this, i.e. use the PC mic and speaker to do voice calls.

So they should all work as 'normal' FSK modems.

If the home PC's got broadband internet then rather connect at full speed from the laptop to the desktop using a VPN. Easiest to setup is Hamachi from www.hamachi.cc

When dialing from your laptop to Desktop you will only connect at modem speeds not broadband. i.e. very slow.

Also bear in mind that you will pay twice for the data transfer on a packet switched connection - e.g. uploading from home and downloading again to your laptop, but it will still be a lot cheaper than making a circuit switched call.

I have now baught an additional huawei e220 hsdpa modem to have my home pc permanently connected to the internet so that I can make an IP connection.

How do i go about configuring the new modem with the 'unrestricted apn'?
