Dialup on an ADSL line?

Here is a real noob question:

Can I dialup to a dialup ISP account on an ADSL line?

Why? I am currently on Telkom dialup but have applied for an ADSL line. I would like to continue to receive my email via my dialup for the next month while I notify folks of my new email address (I am changing ISP). However, I don't know if I can connect an ADSL line to a dialup modem on my computer. I presume that, if this is possible, I will need one of those filter things?

Yes you can...but why? You dont *need* the dailup account to get your email on your old account....Just connect to it with your ADSL account.

You can try webmail perhaps?

The above is definitely possible (ADSL + dialup). You could even run local-only 24/7 and do the call more dialup thing so you have international in the evenings (using route sentry, seeing as dialup is well, a plain dialup connection - like the pppoe connections). Bit of admin to keep things running and reconnecting your dialup every 59min with a CLOSER package (whichever option).. but it CAN be done.

all you need is the login settings for your Telkom e-mail and then you can use your Axxess ADSL to download your Telkom e-mail as well.

Either download it in the same e-mail program (you can have multiple accounts in the same e-mail program) or use another e-mail program like Windows Live Mail or Thunderbird.

You won't need the dial-up anymore, Telkom will let you log in to the mail server from the Axxess account. No problem.

At least you have a brain - yay! Yes, you need to keep the account, else they will just delete the email. Your email is on a server thats connected to the internet. In the past it just happened to be dailup you used to connect to the net, now its ADSL. Not a problem at all iow

Yes, as stated above you need to keep the address running with Telkom.

BUT, we strongly suggest you get a Gmail E-mail account and start routing all your mail to your Gmail account...

You will be able to forward all your old Telkom e-mail and your new Axxess e-mail to the Gmail account.

The benefits of doing this are many.

1) The next time you switch ISPs you still keep the same e-mail account.
2) Gmail keeps all of your e-mail in one place online without you having to move it from computer to computer.
3) Gmail gives you more than 6 Gbs of storage space, more than any South African provider.
4) You don't have to back up your e-mail (although it is still wise to do so), but Gmail takes care of the backups for you.
5) You can access your e-mail from any computer.

Telkom dialup vs Axxess

Telkomsa Internet as ISP, the same username/password can be used as dialup or DSL, Telkom ISP offering is an all access one. Only catch being the do Broadband packages allow only one session at a time, i.e. either connected through DSL only, or dialup. the all access package is limited to 1 Gig DSL, and unlimited dialup. Axxess on the other hand, like many other ISPs charge more for this type of service, i.e choice of dialup or DSL.

Alternative add new mail account, send/recieve will down/up load mails from all Pop3 accounts on any DSL username/password PPPoE, i.e Axxess and Telkomsa

I prefer foreign server options, webmail is the way to move ahead of Pop3 servers.

Thanks, folks, I am learning fast. I collected my router/modem from Telkom today and installed it. When I asked the guy at the Telkom shop if I could still dialup he said "No need. You are now on Do Broadband". I said "But I didn't sign up for Do Broadband. I only signed up for an ADSL line". He just shrugged and said "You have Do Broadband".

After installing the modem and getting all the settings right I found that I could access the internet and email via my dialup account using the ADSL facility. Strange thing is that I get EXACTLY the same pings on my game over the ADSL line as I used to get on dialup. Weird.

Of course, I am now capped at 1gig because I have ADSL whereas on dialup I had no cap at all. On the other hand I can now use the internet 24 hours a day instead of being confined to callmore time. So, the question I have to ask is: Am I better or worse off?

I guess things will get cheaper when I set up the Axxess account, notify the world of my new email address and cancel the Telkom AllAccess account. I am currently testing the performance of my game on the shaped service to see whether or not it is really worth going for unshaped, which is considerably more expensive.

Internet mail (ie, gmail, etc) is a good idea with ADSL. It wasn't practical with dialup because I only dialed in to send and receive. I read and wrote offline. This sure is a new world to explore

Perhaps you could answer your own question by asking yourself this - would you have been able to use 1GB in a month on dial-up for R199?

Yup, just follow the instructions on gmail to enter the pop/smtp settings into your mail client and you're good to go.
