Quick question for medical fundis. Why would Dialysis need to be performed in theater and not bedside in the ICU, if that is where the patient is?

Entire procedure, 4 hours of it.

Would guess it's to keep things sterile then. As in decrease risk of infection. Seriuos burn victims for example have their dressings changed in theatre not ICU for this reason.

Thanks, just got answer from Hospital. They say that a permanent catheter for dialysis is being implanted.

You could donate him one of yours. The hold up is always lack of donors.

1. He refused.
2. 3 other family members have kidney failure, found out within the last 2-3 years so risk it might be hereditary.
3. Sister hasn't had kids so she is off the list.
4. ....

So there are a couple of reasons :o

A old school friends sister got a kidney middle of last year sometime and she was on the list for years, if I recall since 2012.

I have told my wife the only persons I would give a Kidney to is my kids. And I will not receive one from them. There is a reason you have two...

Father has been on the list for 6 years now. No idea what the hold-up is.

What's the average stay on transplant candidate list nowadays?
Anyone know what % of list patients receive a donor kidney?

interesting questions
my mother has been in hospital for 3 months now - one of the specialists treating her is a nephrologist who does transplants.
i see him every day at the hospital - will try remember to ask him

The hold-up is wicked complicated matching. It's not like blood type where there are a handful of options. That plus generally low number of volunteers = low matching.

Also keep in mind that kidney transplant = you're on immunosuppressants for life.

You can do dialysis in even a non-ICU ward. All you need is a rather expensive piece of tech (google company "Braun" (not the shaving co) - they're the top SA supplier) that filter the blood. Hell you can do this AT HOME if you fork out a bad for a machine.

No particular reason why you'd do this in a surgery beyond better equipment. So either they're taking you for a ride or they're being super cautious. Given that you're asking ICU vs theatre I'd be inclined to give them the benefit of doubt. ICU = serious...so docs might just have decided lets have everyone crucial standing right there & all the equipment too if something goes sideways.

I'd definitely ask...seems a touch suspicious to be honest on the cost side.

Source: Not doc or even a medical professional, but I chanced across some of this knowledge via some life detours.

spoke to my mother's nephrologist the other day, who does transplants.
the "average" wait is about 5yrs.

kidney transplants require a whole lot more pathological matches than other organs such as heart, lungs etc
