Did u know that telkom already has some fibre up and running? the telkom manager(senior) told me its up in durban north , some of phoenix coming to westville(some parts) and some other places , i dont know about anywhere else but dbn and he also said that telkom aint going to spend alot of money redoing the infrastructure.he also said that most places wont get it , like where i stay , he said that places like reservoir hills etc wont get it!!!. So this means most people wont get it. i feel this is unfair but it makes sense that telkom wont redo for everyone. he also told me that the techis that came to my house dont know what they are doing because by looking at my line stats alone he can see that theres a fault because of the readings on my router. This totally Sucks because i was waiting for fibre because it would have made getting high speeds easy but looks like most of us will be stuck with telkoms stupid copper until neotel starts up

I heard of that too, my uncle told me about, I'm not sure where he said it was though, I forgot. I hope it comes to my area lol. :/

I've been seeing tons of fibre cable/tube things (orange) lying around on those vacant pieces of feld so it certainly looks like Neotel is rolling out fibre bigtime.

I doubt anyone is going to redo the entire grid though. Its just not feasible imo.

And just today I was saying how nobody seems to reallise that there is a whole other world outside joburg!

Telkom has fibre, but not for the purposes you think. Fibre rollout for infrastructure expansion, mini - DSLAM and UMC to be installed closer to customers to alleviate losses experienced in long (5 km) copper feeds from an exchange. These UMC/DSLAMs are capable of delivering high capacity speed because of shorter distances copper cable feed. Also note Telkom DSLAMs are capable of supporting higher speeds, problems arise where international bandwidth capabilities are demanded, simply not enough for all users at same time, hence the need for throttling speeds.

becuase 100mbit/s is too slow for the future proofing, whats speeds to you reckon we will need when that 30 year old copper turns 60 years old?

4 mpbs are the maximum at the moment in SA and you are expecting a fiber optics lining NOW?

Don't underestimate VDSL2 over copper!
I would be happy with it.

Here a common VDSL2 speedtest result.(50/10 mbps)

And here a result with no download-sync-limit (trial):

There is much potential over copper I think.
It will be enough for many years. :)

You can think about fibre optics in 10-20 years again.
