Did we blow the laptops speakers?

Yesterday the laptop had sound and i must admit it was a wee bit loud, today there is no sound coming out of it and i did fiddle around with the settings but nada.

is it possible the speakers are blown and if so can a use external speakers?

1) Check that the laptop's sound card is showing in Sound settings under Control Panel
2) Check that nothing is muted or turned down in the Mixer under Multimedia.

If all of that is OK, then yes... they might be blown.

What kind of laptop is it, and if you know what kind of speakers?

You can either use your headphone/speaker out jack to some external speakers... or you can buy a set of USB speakers.
 
thanks Gary, i checked the mute settings and they were not set i also looked at the sound files or whatever you call it in control settings and nothing coming out. i did not check if the sound card shows up, i will do that tromorrow. if need be i might just buy my daughter some girly speakers for it if that works.

you can get USB speakers from most computer shops. You can also get some nice USB headphones as well.
 
thanks will check it out tomorrow, and the sad thing about it she asked me to put her ipod music on her laptop so she can listen to them without headphones and i only managed to do that but only so so and now this happens.
 
When speakers blow they very rarely stop entirely - they usually make a completely distorted sound. Doesn't sound like blown speakers to me. Sounds more like the sound card has been damaged somehow if there is no sound whatsoever, in which case a new set of speakers won't help...
 
hmm maybe i should test it out with my desktop speakers first before i spend money on a set for her.
 
and maybe try uninstalling and re-installing/updating the sound card driver.
 
ha ha ha that comment was for your idea about uninstalling and re installing the sound card thingy.

well i checked everything now and even used headphones but only had a crackling sound coming out of it. there were so many different headings under the sound heading i was not sure which to choose so i checked everyone and they seemed ok to me, but then again what do i know. i used the trouble shooting thing and followed the instructions and found,as some of you suspected that there were a few things muted in the entertainment thing and now it seems to be ok.

Glad you got it sorted without having to fork anything out. With out of the box laptop sound cards, you will usually only have to worry about the main volume and pci/wav volume. Also ensure that the mic input is muted for as long as you're not using it. The rest are mostly for inputs and outputs (if any) that you're more than likely not using in your day to day listening to music and movies. No need to mute them, just no need to bother worrying about them.

Next time it happens, mute all channels, and unmute them one by one from left to right until it starts working. Once it starts working, don't bother with the rest of the channels, just leave them muted because they're of no use to you.
