I like because it is arguably (maybe on par with tennis), the most difficult game to master. I have been 'attempting' to play the game for the past 40 years. Only by trying to play the game does one appreciate the mastery and talent of the guys playing there at Augusta.

In fact to 'play golf' is a misnomer. It should be like law or medicine....one can only 'practic(s)e golf'. No one ever properly succeeds in 'playing' it.

I mean politicians/Captains of industry and business people all play golf,
has its own language, deals are made and broken, and its like a world onto those who dont play golf that the average Joe wont get.

I hate to go there, but I equate Golf to a Cult like Freemasonary or Scientology,
even has dues to pay.

Golf from club to professional levels pour R millions into golf for poor people. They get free equipment, coaching and access to courses. Golf is a very expensive sport, especially maintenance of a course. Equipment easily tops R20k too.

Most pro's have establishments pouring money into different causes outside golf too. Ernie Els for example pours heaps of money in golf development and coaching of the less well-off in SA, into development of young golfers aiming to become pro and also has a foundation for autistic children.

It is a well remunerated sport due to the extreme difficulty thereof and marketability.

Why it is such a complicated sport....well, the mechanics require a level of precision not found in other sports. If one hits a ball with the club but 1 degree off-line, the ball lands 200 meters further some 30 meters from the target.

One can not appreciate how absolute insanely good those guys are if you don't play yourself. To be that consistent and always be able to get out of trouble is astonishing.

Go to a golf course one day. You'll see all sorts of people playing.

For a mashie course (up to 130 meters) you can get away 4 or 5 clubs.

On a full course you need only 7 clubs.

At some courses if you are a member, they have specials. At the one I play at its R50 after 4 pm every day. A few clubs do that.

Also playmore gold and golfteetimes have great specials for course around the country.

2nd hand clubs aren't that pricey.

Golf balls you can get at R10 a ball if you go 2nd hand, or buy from the hustlers near the course.
