Diesel 101

I always driven petrol and concede that i know little about diesel... but got a diesel now - and need a quick lesson:
Does diesel have grades like we have for petrol?
Which one is recommended????
Prices - i have seen prices ranging from 7.74/l to 8.31/l....why the difference????:erm:

you get the 50 ppm and the 500ppm. the 500ppm has more sulpher in it, which makes it more dirty, cloggs up your fuel filter and is bad for your engine. a tractor engine should run on 500ppm and thats it rather spent a bit more on fuel than to exchange the fuel filter and maybe a fuel pump aswell..

Diesel isn't regulated like petrol, so the guys at the one stops charge more for their diesel. Yes, diesel have different grades, but it is only the cleanliness that is measured, shown ass PPM or parts per million of sulphur. We get 500ppm mostly but some stations do have 50ppm.

Dude, I have heard stories that you can pay up to R12k for a VW Golf diesel injector
So if I were you, shop around for the cheapest clean diesel, the 50ppm.
Most of the new generation diesel engines requires the low sulphur content.

Hi there.

It would also be good to know what area you live in as the diesel quality varies.
There is 50ppm and 500ppm sulphur available in South Africa. Garages with only one diesel tank will sell one or the other, some offer both.
Most if not all new diesel vehicles require 50ppm diesel although they can run on 500ppm with no noticeable difference.
Sulphur content in diesel has been lowered more as an environmental issue, like lead in petrol. The low sulphur content allows for longer service periods too. Instead of every 7500km for oil changes, servicing is now extended to every 15000km and I have heard on some Mercedes vehicles up to 30000km service period intervals.

The only flaw in lowering the sulphur content is now diesel has got less lubrication and fuel companies need to put in additives to prevent the wear and tear on injectors. But according to what specification? Is the right amount added if any at all? In Cape Town for instance Caltex does not make 50ppm diesel so it has to either be shipped by road from PetroSA in Mossel Bay and then blended with 500ppm to bring up the sulphur content as apparently the raw product from there has virtually no sulphur in it at all. Or 50ppm diesel has to be imported and what lubrication does that have and according to what consumer specification.

What I have found is nobody really knows what diesel is available.

1. Use 50ppm as much as possible.
2. Shop around for cheaper prices
3. Keep your refs between 2 and 3 thousand.
4. Learn to take it easy. You car will be trouble-free if you do.
5. Service it on time, and rather earlier than late.
6. Get a feel for your engine, which gear to use in which situation (My record is 3.6L/100km from Midrand to home +-52km)

I will then from now on specifically ask for 50 ppm - tell me though does it work by garage eg Engen - mostly 50ppm or should i just ask for what i want whiever garage i go. The car is an 09 320d by the way.

I do have a picture for that 3.6l/100km (was done with construction) Will upload later. Driving a 2003 A4 1.9tdi.

BP, Shell, Total and Sasol do have 50ppm at most of their stations. But, it does really pay to look for a garage where you always fill up, ito price and 50ppm availability.

Pretty much depends on the station with shell/total/bp and even caltex. I think all Sasols have 50ppm but there aren't that many of them.

If you can find a Sasol garage close by, stick with it. Their coal-to-liquid process naturally yields lower sulphur diesel. Whereas crude-to-liquid tends to yield higher sulphur diesel. Enjoy your new ride!!!
