Diet and blood pressure

I am one of the "older" forumites. Used to be very healthy with "perfect" blood pressure, sugar and cholestrol levels. However, I changed job 3 yrs ago which meant less physical activity. Now my blood press went up.

I know I have gained around 5 - 8 kgs, and losing that may assist in getting the press down again.

I then googled a diet called "eat right for your type" - or something like that. I am o+ - the so-called "meat eating" group.

Does anyone have experience with this diet?

The blood group diet? I would say, rather try and lose 5kg by cutting down on carb & fat.

+1 on Cutting down carb & fat. I could also add to watch your sodium intake. Sodium increases blood pressure. I'd rather go for a 20min walk/run each day after work if I were you though...

That diet doesn't work long term either. Cut out or cut way down on sodium/salt because it ups the blood pressure and get moving again- even walking daily will reduce the BP until you're fit enough to get back into cardio. You shold get checked for Diabetes.

It may prove difficult to change habits acquired over a lifetime. I just take my BP pills - one a day - and get on with it. A sensible diet, (you'll know what's sensible and what's not: eg: salad & lean meat=sensible, Big Mac & fries=not), some exercise and reduce your stress levels and there's no reason why you have to go through pain, denial and strict diets to stay healthy. But best advice is see your doctor.

edit: I see we're the same age:)

Exercise and a low GI diet work wonders. I was going great guns and doing really well for my health when I hit a little speed bump called "end of the year leave and the silly season". So good luck at this time of year!

i've heard a few ppl mention the blood group diet, but imo i would consider it a fad.

but yes, exercise + a good eating plan will do wonders. increase your water in take, cut down on salt and processed foods, if you eat margirine, try flora....

Drinking lots of water is also supposed to help...but then again with water quality in SA bouncing around like the rand, one might be doing more halm than good.
So I did a search for water purifiers available online found http://www.puresa.co.za ..hope this helps the BP

Thanx guys. Pardon me for taking so long to reply, but it was budget time at work and I have not been on the forum since then!

I went to the doc and it turned out that my diastolic pressure (bottom one) is a tad high. Also my cholestrol. So I have started eating more wisely - fibre, fruit, chicken, salad. Initially it was a problem because the fridge knows me by name and calls me at night....:D But now, 2 weeks later, I find that the kids can have an ice cream without me having one too.

Doc gave me some PB pills - which helps. I have already lost 4 kgs. I geuss that is the price some of us pays for getting older....

However - what to do with the Xmas big eat???

It's not Xmas every day you know!

You enjoy it. It only happens once a year in any case. Then again at New years and maybe your birthday/some special occasion. Won't kill you to deviate from your diet 4/5 times a year. ;)

Now that is good advice.... I tend to overdo things anyhow.

I don't have experience with that diet but there was an article on http://www.fattygetsfit.com that describes that by lowering your fat percentage by only 10% have significant health benefits.

You shouldn't really be thinking "diet" think "lifestyle change"

Reason for this is I am in a similar boat. In 2002 when I started a high-stress low activity job my weight skyrocketed and its been downhill since then
