Hi,
Recently I have been noticing more and more diet programs claiming to perform miracles in terms of weightloss. Prices range from cheap (R250/8weeks) to expensive (R1600/10weeks). Here's the thing, does these programs work long term or is thus just a legalized form of drug addiction?

Normally those diet programs does not include drugs, and if they do its usually associated with a strict diet and exercise program.

There are no shortcuts when it comes to dieting and the reason why you've seen a lot more advertising done on this is because its vacation season (and summer in SA) so everyone wants to wear a bikini and or lose the weight they'll gain by eating like piggies.

I found a website http://www.fattygetsfit.com that has some nice articles there and gets regularly updated on this specific topic.

Worst of all is that all these gimmicks/drugs and different things doesn't mean it has to break the bank. You can, for very cheap, do it yourself.

Yeah well I found that hitting the gym is still the best way to go. I inferred (maybe incorrectly) that these programs use some form of treatment since "no exercise required" is a common trend.

It depends really. Most of these programs do require some kind of calorie restricted diet. I know there's one where you just go lie with like sauna belts wrapped around your body. This is a sure fire way of getting rid of that excess water retention quite rapidly but doesn't have the impact of a good daily routine would have. Hitting the gym is also not a be all and end all.

You can have people going to gym for 12 months and not lose a single kilo. It's a lifestyle change really. Eating healthy and gym can have good effects... and once you've lost those kg's stopping you from progressing you'll feel more confident to hit it even harder to go even further

HOWEVER

a big part of that is motivation and GOAL SETTING. Myself included, I start something and never finish it because I never had a goal in mind. Or my goal was to lose weight, but not specifying how much, when, how I'm going to get there etc.

If you're dedicated and work out 3 days a week and eat healthy, I guarantee a weight loss of 1-4kg's a week depending how hard you push yourself in those 3 days (remember to start off gently though!) and use a heart rate monitor to help you keep in the 85% range.... 20 minutes on the bicycle and 40 minutes weight training is the best. If you want to you could push it even further and do 60 minutes cardio the other 2 days and have a 5 day routine, but this is for those people who are self motivated enough to go through it.

I want to lose 5 by the 24th ..........

not happening

// emo moment....

Yesterday afternoon, at the gym, the woman on the treadmill next to me nearly lost it!

There was a power surge and the machines went off for a few seconds and she apparently lost her pre-programmed routine. Wow, she was upset! :)

Hmmm, maybe a bit of psychological therapy combined with a good work out perhaps? My one friend is a natural body builder (means he doesn't use the roids yo) and he's the most chilled out person I've met.

Shame. Her day probably didn't go too well thats why she got upset. Who did she take it out on?

Backwards is easy? Unless blindfolded... or at a very high altitude...in terms of stairs and stuff. Did he make you do lunges? I fcking hate lunges...

Lunges with 4kg weights!! It's been six weeks with the trainer and my legs are nice and solid but my tummy still wobbly, do you think i should invest in a balance ball for cunchies at home?

I liked the gym thread i need advice and people who suffer with me:o
Motivation. :p

I'm off to the gym at 16:00 again for cardio, 2km row 10 treadmill with incline, 5min cycle (i hate tht toture device) 10 min stair climber, then i hit the pool (really hit the pool, by that time i'm so hot and wasted...:D) For another 15 to 20 min.

Something else i can do? for the wobbly tummy i mean?

I lost 3 Kilo's when I was very young - and in only 2 hours!

I will never eat marbles/goons ever again.

There are specific equipment on the circuit for stomach muscles, Mila.

Remember to get some work on your lower back and shoulders as well. Only concentrating on your stomach muscles is a bad idea. a balance ball would do wonders as you'd be able to do proper squats as well which is excellent for core work.

Loads of cardio is a surefire way to burn excess calories and stores of fat, however, the body is a wonderful (very annoying) thing and quickly adapts to your new work out regime. This is when you'll "platau" and not see any changes in your fat percentage doesn't matter how much cardio you do.

Spice it up between a weight training program and cardio... also start doing interval training (if you can handle it). a great form of interval training is spinning.

Get your trainer to show you the proper way in using the machines, sometimes people just use them and don't really target the right muscle groups and the whole workout can be a waste (and/or result in injury)

Remember to drink loads of water to replensish the oodles of sweat!
