Difference between 1080p and 720p smartphones unnoticable

Ya, don't think there's any perceivable improvement past 300 ppi at reading distance.
 
the eye can see a lot more than "retina" resolutions. retina display is based on 20/20 vision, which is actually quite poor vision
 
I haven't seen it but I'm willing to bet there is a noticeable difference, just ..an impression of windowlike clarity. The only issue is the tradeoff in terms of battery power and increased strain on the GPU. And I'm not sure we're at a point yet where the technology is ready for it; but maybe the next gen SoC's will be capable of pushing that kind of resolution smoothly.
