Hi all

My old Netgear DG834 modem reports my line attenuation at 42db ... I recently replaced it with a Netgear DGN2200 - the newer model reports the line attenuation at 51 db ?

What gives ?

Which of the 2 is accurate and any idea as to what is causing the discrepancy ?

Thanks

Not all routers are created equal ;) the second router looks like a new model so the tech is better thus handles the older cable better imo

One would think so - but a higher attenuation is bad ... the newer model is reporting worse figures.

Now either the newer model is accurate and the old one ( which was reporting the better 42db ) was incorrect or vice versa ... mmmmm

My bad wasn't thinking :/

The most likely cause for the jump in line attenuation is most likely due to different modulation modes:
where your DG834 used G.DMT
and your DGN2200 is using ADSL2+

There might be a hidden page for the DGN2200 that would allow you to change the mode/modulation to G.DMT again.

The reason for the higher line attenuation with ADSL2+ mode is:
1) ADSL2+ mode uses a bigger frequency range (higher maximum frequency than G.DMT)
2) Higher frequencies lose more signal strength than low frequencies over the same distance
