A fight is brewing between Cape Town city council members over a new skateboard policy for the city, it was reported on Monday.

The Cape Times reported that transport, roads and stormwater mayoral committee member, Brett Herron, had set up a task team to create skate parks and roads for skaters.

The team would consider changing the city's bylaws to allow skaters on public roads.

But mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, had a different view.

He said he and other officials believed allowing skaters on public roads was not "wise".

"The uncontrolled use of public roads is dangerous", he said.

Skaters had complained that there were insufficient facilities to accommodate them and said they were being harassed with fines for being on public roads.

"If we want to build an inclusive city, then we have to ensure we do not leave anyone behind," Herron said.

He said it was up to the transport department to decide which roads could be designated for skating.

The problem is most skaters are not old enough to drive and have no idea of the rules of the road. Nearly hit 3 skaters on Saturday morning as the jumped in front of my vehicle at a downhilled stop street - lucky for them I know the road and always stop 2m before rolling slowly forward. You cannot see pedestrians to your left (the side they came from) until you get to the white line. Any other driver would have mowed them down.

The guys where not phased at all, instead they ruin it for the responsible skaters.
