Difficult choice

Hi guys

Well, it's time to let the Duster go and I've basically cut my shortlist down to two.

The one is a 2019 Forester 2.0 with 41000km on the clock. It's still got a year of maintenance plan left and warranty to 2024.

Second option is the Mitsubishi Eclipse Sport 1.5 Turbo. This one is brand new. Obviously it's got its full factory warranty and 5 year service plan. Cons are lower ground clearance and small boot. It's about 30k more than the Forester.

Typical uses will be the school run and at worst a bad gravel road.

I've always been a Subaru fan although I've never owned one and my wife likes the Mitsubishi. I like both and that's why it's probably such a difficult choice.

Any advice? I'm especially concerned about maintenance costs on the Subaru seeing that there'll be no maintenance plan.

Thanks

Do you drive bad roads, in the veld, 4x4 routes. If not go for the new car with it's cvt, which is nicer for city driving.
My boot is always full, I will need the bigger boot, and I do drive horrible farm roads.

Based on this, I'd suggest more road biased suvs, like the Koreans or a Mazda CX5, maybe a Rav4.
If I may, why the interest in these more serious suvs, if a typical soft roader is all it sounds like you need?

The Mitsubishi is more of a soft roaster, actually its only two wheel drive.

The RAV4 is nice, probably out of the budget though.

Which Duster do you currently have, and why is it time?

2019 Suzuki Vitara with 6 speed auto. Will provide a much more refined, comfortable ride and better build quality. Parts and servicing is one of the lowest in the segment. It won the Cars.co.za compact family car/suv of the year 2 or 3 times in a row i believe. 7 airbags and full 5 star Euro NCAP rating. If i remember correctly it also averages around 6.0/100km. So another plus.

Forester diesel or petrol?

The 2l petrol is underpowered in that car. Diesel much better option.

Subaru reputation for reliability is very strong.

It's the petrol, but coming out of the 1.6 Duster, it feels fast enough. The question is whether it will still feel like it when you get used to it.

The Turbo motor in the Mitsubishi is definitely the more powerful one.

Subaru discontinued diesels in SA almost 10 years ago.

Toyota RAV4? If budget won’t allow for the 2.5 VX AWD, I’d suggest the 2.0 GX-R AWD. It really is a lovely vehicle. Such a pity they dropped the diesel though.

I believe out of all the compact SUVs, the RAV4 fares the best off-road.
