I enquired from Digicape 2 BTO iMac quotes. The feedback I received is a absolute joke, I cannot for the life of me figure out how they get to the prices.

I am interested in the topend 27" iMac with i5, Radeon 6970M, etc.

1st Quote: Stock model + 2GB of RAM on the Radeon 6970M
Price: R25 347.00 incl. vat

2nd Quote: Stock model + 2GB of RAM on the Radeon 6970M + 3.4GHZ i7 CPU
Price: AAR R27 640 incl. Vat

What I don't understand is these to upgrades cost $300 on the Apple website. How the heck do they get to that total?! Shipping etc can't be that much different from normal stock they receive?

Bloody hell...

Is R21,739.00 expensive for this:

iMac 27" Core i5 2.8GHz (quad-core)/4GB/1TB/Radeon HD 5750/SD

Yeah, the R5 348 premium for the 2GB VRAM is ridiculous, but the difference of R2 293 for adding the i7 is more reasonable, since that is a $200 upgrade.

They probably have a base R4 000 + charge for just going BTO, ie. if you request a quote for just adding the i7 without the VRAM, it would probably be around R26 500 !

Screw that, I'm just getting the standard top model @ R19 999 from an iStore ... iStore, because you get discount there on Discovery Credit Cards.

Yes, old model at old price ... www.zastore.co.za have that one for R18999, but still ... R19 999 for top of new models is much better deal.

New models are much much faster and came in at lower prices.

Exactly my thoughts. I also have the DiscoveryCard. I am doing another enquiry on the upgrade now, last time. I might end up not getting the damn thing at all.

Just had a look at the T's & C's about the purchase. You won't get that much back.

"Your maximum discountable spend at partner stores is limited to 30% of your total DiscoveryCard spend in that statement period, with your total cash back calculated on a limit of R10 000 spend at all DiscoveryCard partner stores."

So if you spend R21k for the month on your card on the iMac, only R7k will count towards the discount, and of that depending on your Vitality status you will get back anything between R700 and R1400? Is that correct?

In reality you only get 6% max.

Yeah, I get 12%, but the R10 000 limit per store is the one that limits my discount ... The 30% thing is not a problem, I spend a lot :D ... So I'll basically save R1200 ... Correct 6%.

Had to buy a few MBP's for the work last month, so got the full R1200. This month I bought my iPad 2 there, so gonna wait for new billing cycle to start, around 30/31 May and only get the iMac then.

Oh yeah, and then there's Vitality miles (I'm on the fast miles option), so that's worth another 2%.

I'd pay the extra just for the Digicape after sale service. Just my 2 cents ;)

But I am a Digicape fanboi and iStore hater, so some bias :erm:

Please elaborate? I have no bias yet, but I am willing to form one :)

Mmmm ... Digicape lost a few points with the above mentioned quotes ... and with the new CPA, you can pretty much force iStores to give good after sales service.

Just received feedback from Digicape regarding the quotes. Turns out the person doing them had a calculation error in the pipe. The new quote is completely more in line with what I expected.

i7 + 2gb VRAM - ~R23082
i5 + 2gb VRAM - R20978

Glad they sorted out the issue. They are very sensitive to the pricing battle and I appreciate that they took the time to sort out the matter. I can't imagine I would have gotten the same service from any iStore. As a matter of fact, the Menlyn branch hasn't come back with a quote yet, I phoned last Thursday already.

+1 Digicape

Requested quote from Vodaworld iStore this morning, top model + i7 3.4 GHz and swop MagicMouse for MagicTrackpad ... Received quote at 17:10 this afternoon ...R21 899

I'd rather just buy online - *spam link removed*

Mmm... Ok then ... You do realize that the link you posted lists the 2010 i5 with much slower GPU, no ThunderBolt etc at a higher price than the quote I got for the top i7 2011 model.

In fact your link suggests paying R22K for a machine that is now selling for R19K at www.zastore.co.za and I've heard rumours that Dion Wired even sold one at R14K.

Well that site is a search engine for products based on what those online stores provide. I checked yeah and noticed it was an old model after i posted. :)

Haha got RAS for posting a link relevant (even though with an error) to the topic.....

Funny how smaller companies can post links about their local torrent safe engines..... without being RAS'd - fail i tell you epic fail.

Ok, so I pulled the trigger on a 27" i7 ... Not a nice feeling walking out of the iStore with empty hands after paying R11K! ... But I'll be smiling in a few weeks from now. Never had a Mac before, so I hope it's gonna be a pleasant move from Windows.

Congrats man!

I'm still deciding, just can't get over the price :S Don't think I am gonna take any upgrades if I do get the iMac, the i7 is not worth the extra bucks for me, and the 2gb VRAM will just work on my nerves if I have to wait to get the machine :)

From all reviews and performance tests I've read, so far nobody could even set up a test where the 2gb Vram performed better than 1gb. The theory is that future games could maybe benefit from it, but so far nothing.

The i7 on the other hand showed some real advantage over the i5 when running multiple CPU intensive apps and apps that cater for hyperthreading. That said, the i5 is plenty fast at the moment, so i7 is more for future proofing ... But by the time the i5 becomes too slow, the i7 will certainly not be considered fast any more either.

So standard top i5 machine probably makes most sense, but remember, if you go for BTO you pay 50% deposit and rest when it arrives ... So you can then split your Discovery card payments over two months and possibly get max discounts on both payments!

You have my exact thoughts on the spec and future proofing.

Interesting on the Discovery Card payment thing though, maybe I can try and organise the payments like that even for a non-BTO iMac? That would be great.

Yes, go just before the end of your billing cycle and tell them you took a lift with someone so you can't take it immediately ... But you want to pay 50% deposit so they would definitely reserve you one for a few days later :D
