Telkom's Diginet and here as well tariffs refers. Also, port rates for Diginet Plus is here. The base page for the pricelist is here. Search for Diginet and Diginet Plus on this page.

Diginet Basic is 64kb/s and Diginet Plus is from 128kb/s up to 2048kb/s.

At first glance the tariffs seems normal for an installation and use, but the catch is in the first page - you pay the same amount for the same equipment per month.... equipment long paid off still is being paid for.

The second page shows that the greater the distance between points A and B, the more you pay. Also

Gah.

Recently somebody posted a message on the hellkom.co.za website, stating that "If you think ADSL is expensive, try Diginet. A 512kb line with a 40gb cap will set you back a smooth R30000/MONTH." A Diginet line with a cap?

How did he arrive at this amount? According to the information given to us before, it will work out R1523.04 (if I'm correct), for a 512kb/s line. Can somebody show me where I'm wrong? Or is there hidden charges involved?

I arrived at the figure of R1523.08 because I've used the two items listed below :

Charges for 512k Diginet Plus port - R839.04 VAT excl

Equipment rental charges :
- Network Terminating Unit - R684.00

Not sure how you came to this figure but a 256kb Diginet line will cost you R3350.00 plus VAT. So I can only imagine that a 512kb will be about R5k or thereabouts.

But wait, there's more. This is only the Telkom part. And it's the cheap bit. You still need to add on the ISP's charge.

If you want for example say 256k (1:1) local & 64k international at a ratio of 6:1 the ISP cost will be R7330 per month (plus the R3350).

If you then bump up the international to 256kb at a ratio of 1:1 you pay out your teeth.

512kb is of course waaaaaaaaaay more.

Sorry to burst your bubble :-(

Ahhhh.. so that's why it's so expensive...

No bubbles burst with this one. Everyone's complaining that Diginet's so expensive, but with only the data I've managed to collect so far, I couldn't see why... So there really are hidden costs, and you don't have all the facts with you. Bleh.

Thanks for the feedback, tho, it's welcome.

Sitll, more gaaaahhhhh.

Diginet line in the office:
ISP cost = R5930 Ex VAT
Telkom line rental = R2855 Ex VAT

So that is R8785 Ex VAT for 128kb/s local and 64kb/s international

Some prices for SAIX Internet diginet access:

64 k SAIX Gold R6/month
128k SAIX Silver R5500/month someone on the Forum paying R1800/month for 128k
256k SAIX silver R12/month
256k SAIX Gold R24/month
512k SAIX Silver R16/month

Silver : Contention ratio: 1:4 CIR for International 1/4 of CIR speed: bursting to full CIR
Gold Contention ratio: 1:1

Diginet is ancient, and at the prices Telkom sells the services people assume it HAS to be the BEST available. But it's not, it's older than most of my family.

Yep, the first diginet line was laid by the Voortrekkers. :D

The prices qouted on the telkom page are not misleading. They are purely for the wire between two locations, e.g. between two offices or between your office and the ISP. It does not say anywhere that you are getting internet access as well.

That being said, I also think the prices are extreme (normal SAT3 story), some moved from diginet to unshaped ADSL two months ago. I do not host anything on my side, so was able to do that.

In all honesty, these diginet pricings makes me want to vomit. It's been a while since I heard something so disgusting.
