As far as I know there is no advantage to either as far as image quality goes. CMOS is cheaper to make. I'm not sure if there are other benefits.

I'll Google a little more - because if cost was the only factor, surely compacts that are cost sensitive would only use CMOS?

I read somewhere (could be wrong) that CMOS are noisier

Like I said, as far as I know that's the main difference. There may well be more.

Check out my Olympus E-PL1 which I am selling, amazing compact camera in the classifieds. Price is negotiable. (Shameless plug, I know!)

Hmmm... I'm in a spot of bother. I only have around R2k to buy a digital camera and I'm still not sure what to get

What are your needs/requirements?

More than just happy snaps. It's for someone with a more of a serious photographic interest. I'm pretty much thinking about the Canon Powershot SX 130 IS that's going for around R2k.

Useful tip - check out these classifieds at Outdoorphoto. I've mentioned this already but still. Every day they have new deals on camera equipment.

It's a gift for someone, so it can't be second hand :)
