I'm investigating this topic on behalf of a family member. He is looking at the Processors you get in vehicles like cars and forklifts and such terms like TCLK and what not. I don't know what this is but you apparently can plug a laptop into a forklift and they have onboard processors now like some modern cars. I found this book do you think it will help him? If so I will buy it for him! Early birthday present I reckon.

Please give me your feedback on what all this is and can it help him? TIA guys.

Unless he has some form of electrical engineering background probably not, you also need strong math skills.

/shivers when thinking back at fast fourier transforms etc

Usually cars and yellow metal devices communicate via Canbus / modbus and other similar protocols.

Depends what his purpose is exactly.

youtube will probably help alot if he wants to understand from the ground up

You need to get specific information fom him which he requires.

Vehicles differ AFAIK and there isn't a one fit for all in this case.

You might end up buying the incorrect product and that won't help.
I also have a family member working for a prominent vehicle manufacturer. Their training and expertise with these type of systems take years and at great cost.

Ok just a little background. He's a qualified automotive electrician with over 30 years experience and has been working mostly on forklifts. The newer forklifts though are now going the electronic route of modern cars and one day the line between forklift and electric cars is going to become blurry. Apart from forklifts having well Forks and weighing around 5 tons.

Also newer forklift batteries are the solid state cells which are really small and fit into the old battery bay with a heck of a lot of room to spare. Also forklifts are now programmable like cars using Canbus systems and motherboard/CPU setups.

In short he is trying to make the move now into the modern era of forklifts. He mentioned CPU's to me and some other weighty terms regarding CPU types.

I can see he is really trying to get up to speed so I want to help him. Maybe this or some book along the lines of modern electronic vehicles will help.

Thank-you for the feedback so far though guys!

Just my opinion.
Can you possibly see which 'brand' of forklifts he is referring to?
If you know the manufacturers then it should be easier to see the specs of the physical unit and search from that information accordingly.

I will ask in the morning and post back here

All processors operate in the same manor. The communication is in CAN protocol because that is the way it was programmed to be. If you fool around with Arduino's you will see you can make the protocal whatever you like. You are the developer. Even CAN bus communication is not standard between multiple manufacturers. some changes need to be made to decode data.

This is a very wide and demanding field of work. Electrical Engineering is vast. it Incorporates Electrical, Electronics, Digital systems including the subset of programmable logic ( Processors) and communication. This is also the forefather of Programming, Needing math and using math is an understatement!

Make 1 mistake and you will destroy it. Have more local Electronics tinkerers here that burn or have non functional projects than sand grains in the desert...
