Digital TV switch over delayed

So in other words, the government would not have fulfilled its mandate in terms of securing the World Cup on African shores by having DTV setup.

I wonder how long it will be before this actually comes to fruition and AFAIK Cape Town doesn't even have a digital transmitter, much less availability of set top boxes.

Its always a case of one step forward, 3 steps back and wait, we need re-evaluate the situation and then setup a task team and then pass legislation again - I swear I don't know why I even bothered getting remotely excited by this prospect.

How do you transmit an analogue signal from a satellite? Wouldn't atmospheric events screw up the signal enough for it to be useless? Oh, and this is an honest question. Please feel free to get as technical as you'd like in your explanation as I'm not afraid of reading up on terminology I don't understand.

It's been years since I last did this stuff, but iirc analogue satellite TV is broadcast purely as FM modulation (audio and video) whereas terrestrial is AM with a 1.25MHz vestigial sideband and FM for the audio.

Signal interference and attenuation has little to do with whether the signal is analogue or digital.
The modulation type, frequency and transmitter power are what determine how well a signal propagates through a given medium.

You can run analogue or digital over any modulation type and frequency.
In fact all digital transmissions are carried by an analogue component of some sort be it a simple on-off pulse on a wire or a varying electromagnetic field in the air.

Think of digital as being a special encapsulation of analog.
