Hi guys,

I'm seeing something weird. Checking on the pricing of the 40D from www.digitalrev.com from two different locations - one at work and one on a server I have here in the UK, I get two different prices.

This is the search I did. The body only comes up as £657.99 from my server, and £559.99 from work.

Anyone else seeing this?

I'm seeing 559.99

Aah, never mind. I figured it out. After having put something in the basket to see what the shipping & customs would be, it remembers my location and automatically adjust the prices.

So £754.04 for a 40D + with 18-55mm IS Lens Kit for £754.04 including shipping and customs - any good?

Compared to the typically high UK prices, it does look like a good deal but you should weigh up the price difference compared to a local store and the added inconvenience of the body warranty not being UK.
It would be cheaper to use this option of body only and get the lens separate 554.99 + 117.49 = 672.48 and comes with an extra battery.

Or this option with extra battery and grip

Generally DigitalRev will beat the UK prices hands down.

Sorry a bit off topic: The Sony A200 will be available in SA next week.

I think this one is the sweet spot: 40D + 18-55 lens + 2GB CF + extra battery for £609.99 + £55 P&P and they refund the customs. That's cheaper than the body alone in the UK.

Thanks for mentioning them again, Frankie

Not so big a fan of the 18-55 lens. The 18mm is nice to have but for the rest of the range it's neither here not their for me. (It's been sitting in one of my kit bags since I got my second lens. :o)

Not exactly my first choice either but I'm quite impressed by the one I got with the Pentax. Although from the reviews I read the Pentax one is pretty good as far as kit lenses go.

But anyway, it's way better than my P&S anyway, so for this one trip it would suffice. It's not exactly going to put a limit on my skills :) I did consider getting the body only and a comparable EF lens, but didn't find anything that I can afford (along with two DSLRs and an overseas trip in one month...). This will do for now, I'll get myself more glass in a month or two.

What lens do you use for all round shooting, bwana?

I'm wondering if I shouldn't go for the 17-85 rather. The barrel distortion at their shorter ends are equally horrible but both clear up quite nicely from 24/25-ish onwards. Decisions decisions... :)

ATM my 70-200 f/4 of course :D

Otherwise it's a versatile Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DG Macro

You any good with Photoshop?

Ha ha no. The programs I'm skilled in tend to be the ones that requires you to type into a terminal :D I'm learning though. But I'm not about to earn my living of photography, so my demands aren't that high. And what I can't buy now, I can always buy next month.

The reason I ask is its easy enough to fix the distortion if you have Photoshop - even came across the correction settings for that lens (and my 18-55) earlier today.

I thought that's what you were thinking. Saw a post the other day where exactly that came up. Someone posted something to the effect of "kit lens ruined my shot" - it was a really nice shot of an old building, but a bit bent on the sides. Within a minute at least 5 people replied with fixed copies of that same shot :)

Well if you get that lens you're bound to get some practice in then. :D

OK, so I made my decision - get the body and source a lens locally. Hit the "buy now" button, only to find out that my PayPal account has a £500 per day limit. That's easily fixed though. I moved house last month, and over here your address is checked every time you make a payment, which means I have to update those details. I thought, while I'm at it, let me switch to my current account. Now I have to verify it again - takes several days... grrrrr.

Please don't say that! A month from now I'm almost on the way back from holiday...

I do seem to remember last time it showed the next day already. Maybe it's taking longer because it's weekend?
