Do you think that is too much? Could you explain why? Do you know what each seperate component would cost in a typical server room (ie the fire suppression, cooling, UPS etc)

OP - your question has no context, and is therefore impossible to answer. Oversimplified I would guess if you can fit everything you need into one or two of these racks it may end up cheaper. But if you have more than that, it will be cheaper to get a proper server room because the relative costs of the auxilary systems goes down. Have you tried getting quotes yet for a server room setup (seems to be the next logical step). I hope you dont do this for a living :erm:

We just built a DC with fire suppression, raised floors, cooling, etc and it cost over 2 million.

That price is not bad ;)

Modrac options are also very good, but not cheap either

I'm betting that your DC has more than one rack in it, though. :)

My questions to dd1313:
  • Does a self-contained rack provide sufficient cooling and power for your loads? If you want to fill the rack with blade chassis, they're probably out of the question.
  • Do you have enough time to wait for a DC to be put together? If your needs are immediate, get the self-contained rack.
  • If you do have time, figure out how many racks you're going to need, now and in the foreseeable future. If a self-contained rack costs R50k and an ordinary rack costs R10k, the R40k difference per rack is what you'd have to spend on traditional DC infrastructure. Work out the breakeven point.

I am looking @ running 4 x servers - 2 are towers with redundant 800W power supply and then
I am looking at investing 2 in 2 more blades for GIS

Sounds like you mean rack-mount servers, not blades (I don't think buying a blade chassis for just two servers would make sense). Anyway, if you're not going to fill even a single rack, yours is probably an ideal situation for a self-contained rack.
