The company was founded by Jeremy Ord, Richard Came and Bruce Watson in 1983 in South Africa as an information technology specialist.
It was first listed on the JSE Securities Exchange in 1987. In 1998 it acquired Plessey South Africa. During the next two years it bought a series of companies in the UK, North America, Europe and Australia. It was first listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2000. In 2008 it acquired Data Processing Systems, an IT business based in the United Arab Emirates and completed the acquisition of Datacraft Asia, which rebranded to Dimension Data in 2011.
In July 2010, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone announced an agreed takeover of Dimension Data in £2.12 billion ($3.24 billion) deal. The offer was declared unconditional on 11 October 2010, with over 93% of shareholders having agreed to tender their holdings.
In December 2011, Dimension Data was positioned in the Leaders Quadrant of the Gartner Communications Outsourcing and Professional Services Magic Quadrant (COPS) Worldwide report.
