Dirco slams incorrect perception about Chinese products, infrastructure

Pretoria - An incorrect perception has been created about the durability of Chinese products, services and infrastructure as the competition for markets intensifies, the department of international relations and cooperation's deputy director-general responsible for Asia and the Middle East, Ambassador Anil Sooklal, said on Thursday.

"Do you think China doesn't build quality infrastructure? I'm sure the majority of you here have been to China. At one time when we were children, you had a lot of products made in Hong Kong, and we related that to cheap products. Now, it would be a total mistake to regard infrastructure build by China as being sub-quality," Sooklal said as he addressed a high-level seminar on the Beijing's global development strategy, the Belt and Road Initiative, in Pretoria, which coincided with the launch of new books and the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation which kicked off in Beijing on Thursday.

China makes two categories of products. We mostly see the cheap kak, but they can and do produce everything of the highest standard as well, with the accompanying price tag obviously.
I mean, all the high end electronics like iphones are made there...

Correct, like iPhones, and even a few Samsung products, but the design and development companies have direct control of the QC.

Yeah, so that's like impugning German engineering cause Chris Bangle is a yank.

The point is, China can and does produce very good quality products. The fact that they dump cheap crap here and elsewhere speaks more to the local demand and spending ability than the quality of the product. It's the same as cheap pre-frozen and brined chicken from Brazil being sold here - if our local market could produce quality at that price of course we would rather buy that, but Rand talks.
