Hi fellas. I have a folder on my PC called "Software" where I keep setup/installation files, drivers, installation CD/DVD ISO backups, trials etc. Inside "Software" I have the following folders:
* AUDIO - audio convertors, music players & plugins, etc.
* DEVELOPER - software such as Visual Studio, Java compilers etc
* DRIVERS -self explanatory
* FILE MANAGEMENT -movie collection database, photo managers, file utilities (eg bulk renaming, duplicate finders, Linux partition viewers, search utils because Windows 7's search is appalling), folder comparisons etc.
* INTERNET -web browsers, bandwidth/speed monitors, download managers etc
* MUSIC PRODUCTION - any software relevant to music creation ie Reason, FL Studio, VSTs, synths etc
* NETWORK - LAN managers, collaborative stuff like TeamViewer, network management
* OPERATING SYSTEM - backup ISO of my Windows installation discs, service packs, virtualization software like VMWare or VBox etc
* PRODUCTIVITY - MS Office, Adobe programs, graphic design, web design etc
* SECURITY - antivirus, internet security, malware, firewall etc
* UTILITIES - now this is the folder that bugs me most because it contains everything from video editors, bootup management, data recovery, partition management, customizers, tweakers, desktop gadgets etc etc etc etc
* VIDEO - codecs, video players, browser plugins like FlashPlayer
These root folders cause headaches because, for example, I can decide where to put a program like MS Media Player (AUDIO or VIDEO?) without duplicating. Another example would be VMWare & VirtualBox (which are currently under OPERATING SYSTEM), or FlashPlayer which is currently under VIDEO though technically it should either be under INTERNET or in the same folder as my other Adobe software. I am trying to avoid creating additional root folders, in fact I'd like to reduce the number I currently have if possible.
What root folders would one recommend inside a software folder such as mine? Is there a website that could define these folders and list the types of applications/programs that fall under each one? If not, how have you organized your own software folder at home or at work? Any guidance is welcome. Thank you.
